With the volleyball season slowly wrapping up, MBCI school is gearing up for the upcoming basketball season. Tryouts for the SV Girls begin this week on November 27th and wrap up on the 28th. Both sessions will start at 4:00 p.m. and take place in the MBCI gymnasium.
In Saturday’s game, the Storm put on an offensive clinic, scoring four goals in the first and second periods. The third period wasn’t much different, as the Storm notched three more. However, the Storm did not earn a shutout win due to the North Stars’ Lucien Tait-Reaume, who scored a power-play goal at the 11-minute mark. Drew Peters recorded a hat trick, and the other goals were scored by McKenzie Stanton, Cedrick Puffalt, Jacey Melnyk, and Wyatt Hall.
Yesterday's game was another offensive clinic for the Storm. In the first period, Keillan Holland racked up four goals for the Storm, three of which were power-play goals. In the second period, the North Stars got the ball rolling with two unanswered goals, making the score 4-2. Early in the third, Logan Marr notched his first goal of the year, but shortly after, the North Stars responded with a goal, making it 5-3. Keillan Holland ultimately scored the game-winning goal after that response from the North Stars. Norway House made a push at the end but ultimately fell short, with the final score being 6-5.
The Storm will be travelling to Cross Lake this upcoming weekend to battle against the number two team in the KJHL, the Cross Lake Islanders. After this two-game road trip, the Storm will play their remaining four games at home before the new year.
Saturday’s game was much closer, but the on-ice performance was similar to Friday’s. Much like Wayway, Neepawa got a fast start, scoring two goals in the first period, with one coming on a power play. The Blizz picked up momentum early in the second, as Louis-Jacob Beauregard scored his second goal. The third period arrived with the score at 2-1, and the game was still very much within reach for the Blizz. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their night as Neepawa added two more goals near the three-minute and sixteen-minute marks. Brett Ward answered the call for the Blizz, recording his first goal of the season, but it was too late, and the Blizz lost 4-2.
The MGEU West Division standings have become much more interesting after this weekend. Dauphin now holds the top spot as the number-one team in the division. The Blizz are now two points behind the Kings, and Neepawa sits comfortably in third with twenty-eight points. Virden holds the fourth seed with twenty points, but Wayway is slowly catching up after picking up two back-to-back wins.
Next up for the Blizz is a three-game home stand, starting this Friday and Saturday against Niverville and Steinbach. The last game of the stand will be played next week, December 3rd, against the Dauphin Kings.
After winning against division rival Neepawa and going 2-1 in their three-game homestand, the Blizz will embark on a two-game road trip.
Today, they will travel to Waywayseecappo to face the Wolverines.
Wayway is coming off a 4-2 win against division leader Dauphin.
The following day, on Saturday, the Blizz will take a short bus trip to face Neepawa once again.
The Blizz defeated the Titans 3-1 this past Tuesday, but before that, Neepawa was riding a two-game win streak.
Currently, Neepawa is sitting in third place in the MGEU West Division, while Wayway is fighting for the fourth seed, sitting four points behind Virden.
Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. for both games.
Oscar Lathlin Collegiate hosted the Varsity Boys Championship, while the Varsity Girls Championship took place in Flin Flon at Hapnot Collegiate Institute.
Starting with the Varsity Boys, MBCI and OLC dominated their respective pools.
The Wolverines went 7-1 in Pool 1, while the Spartans went undefeated with a 6-0 record in Pool 2.
When bracket play began, the two schools met in the semifinals.
The Spartans came out on top in that matchup and went on to defeat the Frontier Raiders in two sets, winning the Zone 11 "AA" Volleyball Championship.
Moving on to the Varsity Girls, MBCI and OLC were the top teams in Pool 1, while in Pool 2, it was the Hapnot Kopper Kweens and Frontier Raiders who saw the most success.
In bracket play, MBCI and Hapnot Collegiate Institute met in the finals, where the Kopper Kweens emerged victorious.
MBCI and Hapnot will now represent the north at the Provincial "AA" Volleyball Championship next weekend.
The MBCI Senior Varsity Boys squad will compete at Morris School, while the Hapnot Collegiate Kopper Kweens will travel to Rosenort for their Provincial Championship.
Portage was riding an eleven-game win streak and was number one in the MJHL power rankings going into Friday’s game.
The Blizz started things twelve minutes in with a power-play goal from Keenan McNeill.
Thirty-eight seconds later, Marlen Edwards notched his ninth goal of the year, making it 2-0.
Only a few minutes later, Rhett Perrin put Portage on the board, and near the end of the period, MJHL points leader Cameron Bullinger added a power-play goal to tie things up going into the second.
Early in the second period, Max Collyer scored his fourth goal of the season, putting the Blizz up 3-2.
Near the end of the period, former Blizz player now turned Terrier, Adam Belzil, tied things up with a power-play goal.
With the score at 3-3, it was anyone’s game—but that was until Miguel Bouvier buried the go-ahead goal near the five-minute mark of the third period.
His goal was enough for the Blizz to secure a 4-3 victory over the hottest team in the MJHL.
Saturday’s game had a similar feel to Friday’s contest, with plenty of back-and-forth action.
Portage got on the board first with a goal by Scott Cousins.
Not long after, Marlen Edwards responded with a goal, tying things up as the teams headed into the second period.
Four minutes into the second, Portage’s Tristan Gravenor netted his eighth goal of the season, but once again, Marlen Edwards answered for the Blizz, making it 2-2 as the game moved to the third period.
The third period was extremely competitive, but Portage ultimately came out on top.
Wyatt Dreger scored the game-winning goal near the sixteen-minute mark, giving Portage a 3-2 victory.
The Blizz will have a chance to get back into the win column tomorrow as they welcome the Neepawa Titans to town.
