Both JV Volleyball Squads of MBCI are Done for the Year

The two JV volleyball teams of MBCI wrapped up their seasons this past weekend after competing in the Provincial A/AA JV Championships. The JV Girls played their championship at Immanuel Christian School in Winnipeg, while the JV Boys competed at The King's School.

The JV Girls were extremely competitive in their pool but unfortunately fell short during pool play, finishing 0-3. In bracket play, they lost a hard-fought match against the Souris Sabres in the opening round.

Similarly, the JV Boys were aggressive during pool play but ended up placing third with a 1-2 record. However, they went on a strong run in bracket play, securing two back-to-back wins and advancing to the semifinals. In the semis, they ultimately fell short to the Major Pratt Trojans in three sets. The Boys then faced the Glenboro Panthers for third place but lost in two sets.

Both JV squads capped off their seasons as Zone 11 champions and did a great job representing the North in the Provincial Championships.

The OCN Storm went 2-0 this Past Weekend

The OCN Storm are now riding a three-game win streak after a successful two-game homestand this past weekend. The Storm welcomed the Norway House North Stars to the GLMC on both Saturday and Sunday. Before the puck drop on Saturday, the Stars were in fourth place and one point ahead of the Storm in the standings. The Storm were also coming off an impressive 7-4 win over third-place Peguis and had all the momentum heading into this weekend.

In Saturday’s game, the Storm put on an offensive clinic, scoring four goals in the first and second periods. The third period wasn’t much different, as the Storm notched three more. However, the Storm did not earn a shutout win due to the North Stars’ Lucien Tait-Reaume, who scored a power-play goal at the 11-minute mark. Drew Peters recorded a hat trick, and the other goals were scored by McKenzie Stanton, Cedrick Puffalt, Jacey Melnyk, and Wyatt Hall.

Yesterday's game was another offensive clinic for the Storm. In the first period, Keillan Holland racked up four goals for the Storm, three of which were power-play goals. In the second period, the North Stars got the ball rolling with two unanswered goals, making the score 4-2. Early in the third, Logan Marr notched his first goal of the year, but shortly after, the North Stars responded with a goal, making it 5-3. Keillan Holland ultimately scored the game-winning goal after that response from the North Stars. Norway House made a push at the end but ultimately fell short, with the final score being 6-5.

The Storm will be travelling to Cross Lake this upcoming weekend to battle against the number two team in the KJHL, the Cross Lake Islanders. After this two-game road trip, the Storm will play their remaining four games at home before the new year.

Blizz go 0-2 on their Two Game Road-Trip

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard are now on a two-game losing streak after playing on the road this past weekend. Their first game was against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. In the first period, Wayway scored three unanswered goals within fifteen minutes. In the second, it was Wayway again who put themselves on the board, making the score 4-0. The Wolverines were on the power play going into the third period, and they capitalized just sixteen seconds in. Even though the game was out of reach, there was no quit in the Blizz, as Miguel Bouvier notched his thirteenth goal of the season eleven minutes into the third. The Blizz avoided the shutout, with the final score being 5-1.

Saturday’s game was much closer, but the on-ice performance was similar to Friday’s. Much like Wayway, Neepawa got a fast start, scoring two goals in the first period, with one coming on a power play. The Blizz picked up momentum early in the second, as Louis-Jacob Beauregard scored his second goal. The third period arrived with the score at 2-1, and the game was still very much within reach for the Blizz. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their night as Neepawa added two more goals near the three-minute and sixteen-minute marks. Brett Ward answered the call for the Blizz, recording his first goal of the season, but it was too late, and the Blizz lost 4-2.

The MGEU West Division standings have become much more interesting after this weekend. Dauphin now holds the top spot as the number-one team in the division. The Blizz are now two points behind the Kings, and Neepawa sits comfortably in third with twenty-eight points. Virden holds the fourth seed with twenty points, but Wayway is slowly catching up after picking up two back-to-back wins.

Next up for the Blizz is a three-game home stand, starting this Friday and Saturday against Niverville and Steinbach. The last game of the stand will be played next week, December 3rd, against the Dauphin Kings.

OCN Storm Weekend Preview

After splitting the series with the Peguis Juniors this past weekend, the OCN Storm are back at home for a two-game doubleheader against the Norway House North Stars.

The North Stars are currently on a five-game losing streak and are just one point ahead of the Storm in the standings.

The Storm, coming off a 7-4 win against Peguis, are looking to sweep the North Stars and climb back into the fourth seed.

Puck drop tomorrow is at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday's game will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Blizz Road Trip Preview

After winning against division rival Neepawa and going 2-1 in their three-game homestand, the Blizz will embark on a two-game road trip.

Today, they will travel to Waywayseecappo to face the Wolverines.

Wayway is coming off a 4-2 win against division leader Dauphin.

The following day, on Saturday, the Blizz will take a short bus trip to face Neepawa once again.

The Blizz defeated the Titans 3-1 this past Tuesday, but before that, Neepawa was riding a two-game win streak.

Currently, Neepawa is sitting in third place in the MGEU West Division, while Wayway is fighting for the fourth seed, sitting four points behind Virden.

Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. for both games.

Blizz Split Weekend Against Number One Team

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard played their third two-night doubleheader this past weekend, going 1-1 against the Portage Terriers.

Portage was riding an eleven-game win streak and was number one in the MJHL power rankings going into Friday’s game.

The Blizz started things twelve minutes in with a power-play goal from Keenan McNeill.

Thirty-eight seconds later, Marlen Edwards notched his ninth goal of the year, making it 2-0.

Only a few minutes later, Rhett Perrin put Portage on the board, and near the end of the period, MJHL points leader Cameron Bullinger added a power-play goal to tie things up going into the second.

Early in the second period, Max Collyer scored his fourth goal of the season, putting the Blizz up 3-2.

Near the end of the period, former Blizz player now turned Terrier, Adam Belzil, tied things up with a power-play goal.

With the score at 3-3, it was anyone’s game—but that was until Miguel Bouvier buried the go-ahead goal near the five-minute mark of the third period.

His goal was enough for the Blizz to secure a 4-3 victory over the hottest team in the MJHL.

Saturday’s game had a similar feel to Friday’s contest, with plenty of back-and-forth action.

Portage got on the board first with a goal by Scott Cousins.

Not long after, Marlen Edwards responded with a goal, tying things up as the teams headed into the second period.

Four minutes into the second, Portage’s Tristan Gravenor netted his eighth goal of the season, but once again, Marlen Edwards answered for the Blizz, making it 2-2 as the game moved to the third period.

The third period was extremely competitive, but Portage ultimately came out on top.

Wyatt Dreger scored the game-winning goal near the sixteen-minute mark, giving Portage a 3-2 victory.

The Blizz will have a chance to get back into the win column tomorrow as they welcome the Neepawa Titans to town.

Neepawa sits in third place in the MGEU West Division and is currently riding a two-game winning streak.

In the first fifteen minutes of Friday's game, Winkler scored two goals with one being short-handed.

Luckily newcomer Max Collyer buried one late in the first making it a 2-1 game.

Right after Collyer's goal, Winkler picked up a four-minute double minor penalty for high-sticking that carried on into the second.

Quincy Supprien and the Blizz took advantage and scored a power-play goal but not too long after, Winkler notched another one making it a 3-2 game.

Once the third period came around it was all about Winkler as they scored two unanswered goals, the final score was 5-2.

The first period of Saturday's game was pretty even-keeled, Winkler scored a power play goal in the first five minutes and Quincy Supprien was able to answer the bell to tie things up.

The second period eventually came around and things started to heat up for the Blizz as they scored four goals in ten minutes.

The score was 5-1 up until Winkler scored their second power-play goal making it 5-2.

With the score being 7-3, it looked like the game was over for Winkler.

That was the case up until the last seven minutes when Winkler scored three unanswered goals.

Luckily goaltender Taye Timmerman held on and the Blizz won 7-6.
