OCN Storm Eliminated From The Playoffs

Despite two impressive comebacks during the second and third periods the OCN Storm have been eliminated from the playoffs.

 

Blaine Dorian and Lazaras Constant brought the score to 2-2 in the first 45 seconds of the second period.

 

Blaine scored again during the third and Magnus Pearson forced the game into overtime in the final minute of play. Albert Sinclair scored the final goal to bring the score 5-4 for the Flames, who move on the face the Peguis Juniors.

OCN Blizzard Release Billy Keane

The OCN Blizzard announced the decision to part ways with Head Coach and General Manager Billy Keane last Friday.

Billy came to the Blizzard with an extensive coaching history. Coaching for the University of Manitoba as assistant coach from 1990 to 1999 and the Winnipeg Blues from 2010-2016 as assistant coach, and head coach for the 2017-2018 season.

Billy joined the Blizzard during the 2020-21 season from Winnipeg, but the season was cut short in October due to a league wide shutdown caused by Covid-19.

This year the Blizzard faced challenges beyond other MJHL teams. The team was unable to play in their home rink until November due to a broken ice plant, burst pipes and later facing Covid-19 restrictions in early January. The Blizzard finished with an 18-29-2-4 record, cutting them from playoff contention.

Margaret Barbour Spartans AA Basketball Teams Hit the Podiums

The Provincial AA Girls and Boys tournaments took place over the weekend and the Margaret Barbour Spartans stood on the podium twice!

 

The Boys team won silver in the finals after a close 67-63 loss to Gabriel-Roy Les Roys on Saturday.

 

The Girls team won 57-45 against the Carman Cougars in the consolation final.

OCN Storm Fell Short to The NCN Flames

After a pair of losses the OCN Storm are getting ready to keep their spot in the playoffs this weekend.

 

The storm fell 6-4 on Saturday with goals scored by Chavez Constant, Magnus Pearson, and Harlan Jacobson.

 

Sunday’s  5-1 loss the lone Storm goal was scored by Roger Houle Jr.

 

This Saturday they host the flames at the GLMC at 7:30 in round 3 of 4 against the flames.

Margaret Barbour Spartains AA Basketball Teams at the Provincials

The Margaret Barbour Spartans AA Boys and AA Girls teams are at the provincials this weekend!

 

Today the AA Boys are at Westpark School in Portage La Prairie, they face the Carmen Cougars at 1:30 PM.

 

The AA Girls fell 60-58 against Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys yesterday in Souris and will face a team still set to be announced at 6:45 pm today.

Midwest Karate Club Students Move Up

The Midwest Karate Club celebrated many of their students moving up a belt during their seminar.

 

Andrew Ballantyne became the clubs newest black belt while Alesha Jackson received her high purple belt, Carl Prado received his semi brown belt and many more students moved up at the seminar.

OCN Blizzard Player Standings in the League

The Season may be over for the OCN Blizzard but they still left their mark on the player standings. Dain Sardelli tied for 6th place for goals with 29 goals this season. Fans and staff both agree had it not been for a 9 game suspension in November Sardelli may have been much higher in the standings. Sardelli also finished ranked 15th for points at 53 points.

 

Steven Bacovsky finished with a 0.914 save percentage to end the season 4th in the MJHL. He also ranked 10th in the MJHL with a goals against average of 3.30.

 

Both Dain and Steven have graduated to the college level and we wish them the best of luck in their future hockey careers.

OCN Blizzard Take VIrden Into Overtime

The OCN Blizzard took the Virden oil capitals into overtime to wrap up the season.

 

Blizzards Riley Zimmerman, Brett Ta-TairAn and Aaron Lorenz scored during the game before the Virden oil capitals scored during overtime to wrap up the game 4-3

OCN Storm Wrap Up Regular Season With a Win

The OCN Storm won 13-6 against the Cross Lake Islanders last night.

 

Houle Jr scored a hat trick while Beardy scored another two goals with more goals from all over the team.

 

The OCN Storm now get a break before heading to Nelson House for the first round of the playoffs March 19th and 20th.

OCN Blizzard Fall to the Oil Capitals in the Second Half

The OCN Blizzard fell short last night against the Virden Oil Capitals. Although the Blizzard fought back and pulled ahead early into the second period with goals from Ashton Paul and Brett Tataryn the Virden Oil Capitals came back in the third, wrapping up the game 6-3 with the last Blizzard goal scored by Drayden Kurbatoff. The OCN Blizzards last game of the season kicks off today at 7:30PM in Virden.

31st Annual Jack Burden Memorial U9 Hockey Tournament

The 31st Annual Jack Burden Memorial Under-9 Tournament starts today (Friday) at 4.

 

The tournament features a total of 10 teams from Thompson, Flin Flon, The Pas, Rankin Inlet and Gillam.

 

All the tournament action runs at the TRCC with games in the C.A. Nesbitt and Gordon Beard Arenas.

Ice Fishing Derby Coming Up

The All Ages Ice Fishing Derby is on the way starting March 19th on the Carrot River.

 

Tickets are $25 per hole in advance or $30 at the ice with a $10 side bet.  There will be plenty of prizes for 1st to 3rd place in the Men’s and Women’s categories, youngest and oldest fisherman, biggest other fish and more.

 

Sales benefiting the All Men’s Mighty Creez and All Women’s Grand Slam Me Slo-pitch teams to help pay for the cost of travel for the All Men’s and Women’s Slo-pitch Nationals in Whitehorse Yukon at the end of July.

OCN Blizzard Win Streak Comes to an End

After a 4 game win streak the OCN Blizzard have been knocked out of playoff contention over the weekend. The Blizzard fell 4-0 against the Swan Valley Stampeders on Saturday.

 

The Game started with two early goals for the Stampeders giving them a 2 goal lead that lasted until the third period. 

 

Early into the third the Stampeders scored their final two goals to wrap up the game.

 

The Blizzard head to Virden to face the Oil Capitals this Thursday and Friday in the final games of the regular season.

MBCI Dominates Basketball Zones

There was a lot of excitement at Hapnot Collegiate this past weekend,  as for the first time in two years,  Senior Basketball Zones took place.

 

MBCI from the Pas came in the heavy favorites for both the boys and girls. The girl's team was ranked no.1 in the province while the boy's team was ranked no.4.

 

Neither team lost a game and took home both  Zone banners.

 

The MBCI Girls went 4-0 and beat Hapnot in the final 61 to 50. It was a very spirited affair and the gym was packed with fans cheering for both teams.

 

A great effort from Hapnot who gave MBCI everything they wanted in the final game. Hapnot may still get a chance to go to Provincials as they may get a chance at a Wild Card.

 

Details should be released later this week.

 

The MBCI Boys also went 4-0 and dominated their competition including an 83 to 49 win over Hapnot in the final.

 

A big thank you to all the coaches, players, officials, volunteers, and good luck to all the graduating players. 

U-9 Results From The Pas

Funky Threads and the A & W hosted a U-9 Hockey Tournament in the Pas this weekend with the final games just wrapping up this afternoon.

 

The tournament once again featured house league teams from Flin Flon, The Pas, Thompson, and Swan River.

 

Flin Flon sent three teams including McKeens Trucking, The FF Firemen, and the Steelworkers.

 

The Firemen finished the round-robin with a win, loss, and a tie. Steelworkers were 1-2 and McKeens finished with 2 wins and a loss.

 

In the Finals played today.

 

The FF Firemen beat the Steelworkers 6 to 5 in the C Final.

 

McKeens finished third overall beating the Pas Huskies 10 to 7 in a very exciting game. Aubree Vancoughnett played very well in the net while Brody Cooper was the game star with a hat-trick.

 

The kids had a blast and the tournament was well organized and lots of spectators made their way to the rink throughout the weekend.

MBCI Boys and Girls Headed to Flin Flon

The Margaret Barbour Spartans AA Basketball Girls and boys teams are head to Flin Flon for Zone play down action today and tomorrow! Today the first game starts at 1PM followed by game 2 for the girls. Tomorrow the boys team hits the court at 3 and 7 pm.

 

Both teams are currently ranked first in the AA Division.

Final Home Game of The Regular Season Tonight

The OCN Blizzard have kept their playoff dreams alive after 3 back to back wins. Tonight the Blizzard host the Swan Valley Stampeder’s at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre at 7 PM. Tonights game is also the last home game of the regular season, tickets can be bought right at the GLMC with a potential to win a pair from 102.9 CJAR (wink wink). We’ll be broadcasting tonight game beginning at 6:45 pm with your pre game show.

OCN Blizzard Keep The Stampede at a Standstill

The Stampede remains at a standstill as the OCN Blizzard picked up their 3rd win in a row last night. Dain Sardelli scored another hat trick while fellow Blizzards Drake Flynn, Raj Gill and Cyrus Toth helped wrap up the night 6-3 for the Blizzard. Goaltender Nick Pineo stopped 40 of 43 shots on goal.

 

After a break today the team hosts the Stampeders tomorrow night at 7 PM at the GLMC. Sardelli now sits at a 3 way tie for 2nd place in the MJHL for top scorer with 29 goals this season.

MBCI Boys Headed to 2022 Provincial High School Curling Championships

The 2022 Provincial High School Curling Championships take place this week! The Margaret Barbour Spartans Varsity Boy’s team head to Kenton Manitoba to face the St. Paul’s Crusaders tomorrow at 9 AM. If the team moves into the second round they’ll face either the Morris Mavericks or Hamiota Huskies in the afternoon.

Blizzard Game Tonight

The OCN Blizzard hit the road today to face their Northern rivals the Swan Valley Stampeders. The Blizzard are coming off a pair of wins at home when they Hosted the Neepawa Titans, winning 5-3 and 4-0. Tonight’s game starts at 7 PM.

26th Annual A &W Funky Threads U-9 Tournament

The Roy H Johnston Arena in the Pas is all set for the 26th annual A&W, Funky Threads U-9 Minor Hockey Tournament this weekend.

 

This will be a tournament that will feature house league teams from Flin Flon, The Pas, Thompson, and Swan River.

 

Round robin games will start Friday at 3 and continue throughout Saturday.

 

Playoffs begin Sunday at 9 with the Gold Medal game at 1.

Successful Weekend For The OCN Storm

The OCN Storm had a successful weekend after hosting the Cross Lake Islanders. On Saturday the game started with a tie in the first period with goals by Roger Houle Jr. and Hunter Bear. The Storm then began pulling ahead in the second period with 6 goals on the Islanders, two of which were from Harlan Jacobson and another two by Magnus Pearson. The third period saw a whopping 7 goals scored by the Storm, including the completion of a hat trick for Roger Houle Jr. Wrapping up the game 15-4 for the Storm.

 

Sunday the Storm came through with another win, this time 9-3 with goals by Sheldon Chartier, Harlan Jacobson, Blaine Dorian, Roger Houl Jr., Jeritt Cowley, Damon Constant, Dreydin Garrick and Nolan Rideout.
