Job Opportunity - The Pas Settlement Coordinator

The Pas has an opening for a Settlement worker, working part-time in the local schools and part-time in the settlement office.
Interested individuals will need to be innovative and organized, with an interest in children. An understanding of immigration issues
is required. Training and support will be provided.

Commencing: June 2022

Compensation: Salary is $22.67 per hour plus benefits

Position Description: The job is two-fold, with approximately 15 hours per week being spent working directly in the local schools. The
settlement worker will partner with and work out of local schools to help orient, connect and integrate newcomer children and
youth to their new school and community. Programming will focus on bridging connections between newcomer students and non-newcomer
students at each of the schools, as well as engaging parents and guardians. SWIS (Settlement Worker in Schools) is a
program that focuses on the students to assist them and their families to better understand and participate in the school system to
achieve positive outcomes. The remaining 15 hours will be spent in the office assisting Newcomer immigrant families and
individuals to help them integrate into the Pas Community. The coordinator will conduct ongoing needs assessments of newcomer
families and will facilitate access to community resources, programs, and services, and also facilitate regular information and
connection events for clients. During the summer the coordinator will manage the Youth Engagement program working directly with
the children in our day camp.

Required and Preferred qualifications:
• High degree of initiative, organizational skills, and time management skills
• Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently, to set goals and measure achievements
• Excellent English language ability both written and spoken is essential
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
• A positive outlook with a belief in the ethic of caring and inclusion
• A strong understanding of the Canadian public school system
• Previous experience working with children, community groups, government, and non-profit agencies and organizations
• Understanding of the settlement process and of issues relating to the refugee and immigrant experience
• Related experience - personal or professional with immigration processes preferred
• Strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and email
• Completion of post-secondary education (or related experience) in social work or related area of studies preferred.
• Valid Manitoba Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle

Summer Employment Opportunity
The Sam Waller Museum is seeking a summer student for the following position:
Job Title: Museum Host
Working Conditions:
Work with the Curatorial Assistant on a shared project to complete permanent exhibit renovation mounts, inventories, condition reports, database updates, and some exhibit labels.
Assist with general museum operations including basic security and facility maintenance.
Host museum visitors by providing an interpretation of exhibits, local heritage, and tourist information as required.
Review, revise and implement established programs for Museum visitors, including the Historic Walking Tour, exhibit tours, and children’s “Discovery Centre” programming
Work to take place inside and outside the facility
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Working knowledge of a variety of computer programs
Demonstrated research skills
Proven ability to work unsupervised
Organized, personable, outgoing, at ease with children/seniors
Must be able to work independently and as a team member
Additional Assets:
Post-secondary studies in any of the following: tourism, education, recreation, communications, anthropology, history
Experience with school groups/program development
Knowledge of local history.
