Telestroke Expanded to The Pas

The Province of Manitoba has now expanded the successful stroke emergency care program to The Pas and area. Stroke Patients in the north will now benefit from the new equipment and Helga Bryant CEO of the NRH says it’s already paying dividends. The Pas will be a hub serving the entire area including Flin Flon. St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas is now the fifth hospital in the province to become part of the telestroke program.

 

Health Complex Radio Pledge Show Success

The Pas Health Complex Foundation held their annual radio pledge show last week. With the help of 102.9 CJAR they raised a lot of money. Sue Lambert the chair of the foundation said the rose a lot of money this year. This year they blew their goal of $17,000 out of the water as they rose $24,000. This breaks their pledge show record set last year at $15,000.

Kindergarten Orientation Tonight

Ecole Opasquia School is welcoming you and your child to a Kindergarten Orientation tonight. They are inviting you to share in family activities that will help your child have a successful transition to Kindergarten. The orientation is tonight at the Ecole Opasquia School at 6pm. The Pas Spring Clean Up

The Town of The Pas is in full swing with their Spring Clean up Campaign. The two week clean up is underway and this week features the west side of town. The Town of The Pas will be out to pick up excess refuse on the west side of the tracks. Next week they will be out to make pickups on the east side. Some disposal instructions include Regular household garbage is to be placed in your garbage stand to be picked up on your scheduled garbage day, and recyclables are to be taken to your closet recycling trailer. Also all refuse should be protected from wind and wildlife. All refuse is to be placed in disposable containers, bag tags are not required.

Anti bullying day

You are being encouraged to register your business and wear pink to work on May 29th.

 

The Pas Community Renewal Corporation says tickled pink day is in support of anti bullying and they would like businesses to ask staff to participate by wearing pink and by decorating their businesses.   TPCRC will also be going to the schools for an anti bullying walk.

MTS Future First Grant

Thanks to your support through online voting The Pas Action Centre will receive one of the 10 grants through MTS Future First campaign.

The Future First Grant will ensure the center’s After School Program can continue to provide services such as cooking classes, outings, movie nights and boxing classes.

The After School program gives youth living in the Kelsey Estates  area a chance to develop a sense of investment in their communitiy and serve as examples for others.

The Pas Action Centre is one of ten organizations from across the province to be awarded the grant.

Community Clean Up

You can join other community members for spring clean up.

 

Christa from The Pas Community Renewal Corporation says people are already making the effort to clean up the community and on May 30th, they invited to be part of a group effort .

 

The Pas Community Clean Up is hosted by the renewal Corporation, and everyone is invited to meet at the Royal Cdn. Legion at 11 a.m.

Parent and Me Program

 The Pas Recreation and Wellness Centre is offering The Parent & Me Water Safety Program.

 

Amber Whitehead from the Kelsey Rec Centre says the program is free for parents and their toddlers ages 1 – 4.  The parents will receive water safety and education while the kids will have pre-school lessons. 


The classes run between  May 19th and June 25th at different days and times.

Sam Waller Museum Art Display

The Sam Waller Museum is hosting a local art show throughout the summer.

 

The great Five Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether is the theme  of the summer art show taking place at the museum and  it runs from June 8th to September 27, 2015.  Entry forms and payments are due by Friday for those wishing to display their artwork and all Artwork is due by May29th.

Trade Show Recap

The Pas and District Chamber of Commerce annual Trade show wrapped up the the Roy H Johnston Arena on Saturday.

 

The three day trade show has seen thousands of people visiting and looking through the 62 exhibits. They had booths serving popcorn to Cotton Candy to Toys and even clothing. Every year the trade show brings people into our community spending their money and helping our economy

Mother's Day Supper on Sunday

Mother’s day is on Sunday and the Wanless Comunnity Club is hosting a Mother’s Day Supper. Everyone is invited and it will start at 5pm at the Wanless Community Hall. Tickets are available at the We-Ste General Store or through Chandra Lynn Lafontaine at 204-623-7471. There will be door prizes and a silent auction. 

McHappy Day a Success in The Pas

On Wednesday McDonalds restaurants across Canada we’re raising money for charity as part of McHappy Day. Our Store in The Pas had a very successful day and Shelly Gallagher store manager has more. Over $1,800 was raised in The Pas which is up from last year’s just over $1,000. Money raised will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg. McDonald’s staff were joined throughout the day by 8 guest servers from the community including 102.9 CJAR on air staff.

Tea Filled Weekend

A couple of tea’s will be held in The Pas this weekend. It’s your chance to enjoy some tea and some great company. The Pas Regional Library is holding a mad hatters tea on Saturday from 2-4pm. It’s open to kids ages 5 and up and space is limited. Also on Saturday at the Legion, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting their spring tea from 1-3pm. Everyone is invited, There will be a looney table, bake table, raffles, hamper and a kids looney table.

 

Trade Show Starts Tonight

The Pas Chamber of Commerce and District Annual Trade Show starts tonight. Shirley Barbeau the Chamber of Commerce's Office Manager and Trade Show Coordinator says they're looking forward to it. The Trade show is open from 5pm to 9pm, it's also open tomorrow from noon to 9pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. This year the Roy H Johnston arena will be packed with 62 different vendors.

War Amps Key Tags Being Sent Out

This week or next week you will receive your War Amps Key Tag in The Mail. Every year the War Amps mail out Key Tags to anyone who has registered for one. What they are is tags you add to your set of keys so encase you lose them they can be found and returned to you. Jamie Lunn their Public Awareness Officer hopes you have remembered your donation. Lunn says often people find value in their key tag service and generously donate. The War Amps receive no government funding so they depend on donations from their key tags and address label programs.

It's McHappy Day!

Today is McHappy Day across Canada. McHappy Day is a national fundraiser that has McDonald’s restaurants across Canada raising money for local charities. In The Pas our McDonalds will be doing the same thing as last year, one dollar from every Big Mac, Happy Meal or an Egg McMuffin purchase will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg. McHappy Day runs all day with various community representatives including 102.9 CJAR’s on air staff helping out in the restaurant. Last year McDonalds in The Pas raised just over $1,000 for the Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg.

Christ Anglican Church Yard Sale

There’s something for everyone at the Christ Anglican Church’s yard Sale this weekend. It’s a chance to discover a new treasure and the yard sale will be held at the Parish Hall at 1 Saskatchewan Crescent. The sale is Saturday from 8am till noon.

 

Tickled Pink Day

May 29th is Tickled Pink Day. The annual day is celebrated across the world, but originates in Canada and started as a protest against a bullying incident at a high school in Nova Scotia in 2007, when a grade nine student, Charles McNeill, arrived to school wearing a pink shirt. Everyone is encouraged to wear pick on the 29th and the TPCRC would like businesses to join in. The TPCRC as well as some members from the RCMP will be visiting schools for an anti-bullying walk.

 

UCN Instructor Receives Provinces Highest Teaching Award

A UCN Instructor is a recipient of the provinces highest teaching award. Ms. Rachel Mitchell is one of eight recipients for Manitoba’s Celebration of Excellence in Teaching 2014-2015 Minister Awards. Manitoba’s Minister of Education and Advanced Learning James Allum, made the announcement saying her “demonstration of leadership through innovative ways of delivering the curriculum, the contagious enthusiasm for learning she shares with her students and the time devoted well beyond the regular school day”. Ms. Mitchell was nominated by her students and peers at UCN's Adult Learning Centre in Thompson campus, where she has been an instructor for 6 years. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding educators who work tirelessly to inspire their students and instill a lifelong love of learning.

The Paw Local Dog Rescue Adoption Show

A Couple Local groups are look to have more pets adopted! Emma Lees with The Paw Local Dog Rescue says they've had dogs adopted from all over the world. The easiest way to get ahold of The Dog Rescue is through facebook at The Paw Local Dog Rescue. Also the Rescue along with a Cat Rescue and Precious Pets are hosting an adoption show next Saturday. Dogs and cats will be available for adoption at precious pets from 11am to 4pm. There will be all kinds of events for kids. 

Jordin Tootoo To Speak At UCN

UCN and 102.9 CJAR are proud to present NHL star Jordin Tootoo to the Communities of The Pas, OCN and RM of Kelsey.  Jordin Tootoo will be speaking in the UCN gym on Monday telling his story on his rise to the top and become the first Inuit hockey player to make it to the NHL. Seating is limited to 450 people and it is expected to sell out. 102.9 CJAR will be broadcasting his entire speech over the air live Monday starting at 7pm for those who would like to listen in the comfort of their own homes. Tootoo has played 607 NHL games with 149 points and 880 penalty minutes. he started his Junior career with the OCN Blizzard in 1998-99 recording 16 goals and 21 assists in 47 games.
