Operation Red Nose kicked off over the weekend, offering safe rides for you and your vehicle home
during the holidays.

Over the first weekend, the program gave rides to 64 passengers, and more than 300 kilometers were traveled in combination with the 28 volunteer teams that were out.

Operation Red Nose will be in service again over the weekend, from 9 pm to 3 am

The services will be offered every weekend leading up until Christmas and then again over the New Year.

The Kelsey Trail Snow Rider Club has been busy this winter, with the heavy consistent snowfall these past few weeks have led to some closers of snow-mobile trails with fallen trees blocking paths.

While group members have tried their best to pack down and clear the trails, and while they’ve made good progress it’s to no avail.

Snow Rider President Rob Vi-Pond has made a request to residents of the past and the surrounding area there more than welcome to clear out the fallen trees and pack down the trails.

This year the Ecole Opasquia is bringing back the Festival of Trees.

Jen Mathews, the event coordinator has the details.

the event will include a gingerbread house display, Christmas entertainment, a children's carnival, raffles, and more.

Volunteers are still needed for this year's event and for more information on volunteering at this year's event or registering a tree to design you can find information on Facebook at the festival of trees at Ecole Opasquia school page.

Gateway Keewatin Inc. will be hosting a public meeting at 11 am at the legion, in regard to upgrades to highway 283.

Topics being covered at the meeting include Weight restrictions being removed, highway connectivity to the north, and highway 55 construction.

Alan McLauchlan with the organization talks about the need for the corridor.

McLauchlan goes on to say that highway 283 is not up to primary status, and they have made strides with the highway minister in regard to the upgrades.

Last week Manitoba premier spoke about expected upgrades to the northern corridor in the future, and it’s expected that more details on the upgrades to highway 283 will come soon.

The Cedar lake community futures program is hosting an indigenous woman’s entrepreneur workshop.

This is part of a larger program that was introduced last March.

Michelle Pruder, with community futures north central development, explained it introduces indigenous women to business development, business practices, and other women from across the country in regard to their experience.

Here Pruder talks about grants and funding.

Pruder explained that a portion of the loan is forgivable as financial capability is one of the hurdles stopping women from becoming entrepreneurs

On April 6, 2022, the MLA for Flin Flon, Tom Lindsey introduced Bill 229: The Transportation Infrastructure Amendment Act,

This bill was intended to add a requirement that the minister establishes standards for clearing snow from provincial roads.

The standards would have to meet the minimum requirements set out in the Act and must be published publicly. Many community members have already reached out in support of this bill, or have shared their many experiences feeling unsafe on the frequently snow-covered roads.

the current Minister denies that there is a staffing shortage or gap in service when it comes to clearing roads.

60 road maintenance positions over the past four years were cut, leading to a 47% vacancy rate in the northern region. This means that there are 120 vacant positions, and 300 pieces of heavy equipment were sold in 2 years.

the government is showing how little they prioritize northern Manitoba. Not only is this out of touch, but it denies the reality of Manitobans living in rural, northern, and remote areas.

As of November 15^th, Lathlin has begun the fifth legislative session with a speech from the throne. The direction that this government plans to take in the final year before the next election seems to once again repeat its terrible decisions, and once again falls short of recognizing and addressing the needs of northern Manitoba.

It's officially Christmas in Northern Manitoba, The Pas Community Renewal Corporation is bringing back The Pas Santa Claus Parade for another year.

The Parade will start on December 9, at 5:30 on first street west and will end at 6:30 on Smith Avenue.

The Renewal Corporation is also asking local businesses to take part by either sponsoring and/or being in
the parade with a float.

At the end of the parade, the community is invited to skate with Santa from 6:30 - 7:30 at the Roy H. Johnston
Arena.

The UCN is hosting a winter coat drive this week, running from tomorrow till Thursday at The Pas campus.

The goal is to bring in donations of mitts hats toques, sweaters, coats, and other warm winter wear to help the community.

Donations can be dropped off in the lobby of the UCN.

And anything collected will be going to support the Friendship center and Oscars place.

It’s noted that items are needed for all ages, and they are looking for new or gently used items.

There were 59 assaults, 114 reports of mischief, and 103 disturbances of peace reported in the town of The Pas in October which was an overall drop in crime reported month to month.

The RM of Kelsey reported 59 traffic violations, 4 thefts, 6 reports of mischief, and 9 assaults, which aside from a rise in reported assault cases, was an overall drop in crime.

With a large number of traffic violations being reported through the community, Arctic radio is reminding everyone to practice safe driving habits during the winter months and using winter tires on vehicles.

The Home Routes concert service returned to in-person events this year.
The next concert is coming up this Friday at the library at 7 pm

CJAR had a chance to speak with David Essig ahead of this weekend’s Home Routes Concert; here he

A test of Alert Ready, Canada’s National Public Alerting System will take place Wednesday afternoon at 1:55 in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The respective emergency management organizations will issue one test message over television, radio and compatible LTE wireless devices.  They note testing of the Alert Ready system provides the opportunity to increase public awareness about the system and spark emergency preparedness conversations so that Canadians can be ready and prepared in the event of an actual emergency and to validate the effectiveness and reliability of the system to ensure it operates in the event of an actual emergency.

Alert Ready was developed in collaboration with federal, provincial, and territorial government agencies, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry, and wireless service providers.

They add that given the importance of warning Canadians of an imminent threat to the safety of life and property Canadians do not have the option to opt out of this essential life-saving service.

Hamper drive season is here, and CJAR will be playing host to The Pas Friendship Center for two fundraisers happening this week.

This morning the friendship center is having a turkey drive today from 8:30 until 10:30.

Donations are taken to help support low-income families locally when it comes to feeding the family for the holidays.

Donations of 20 dollars or more are eligible for a charitable receipt, and all donations are accepted.

On November 11th, 1918 at 11 AM, an armistice was signed to mark the end of the First World War.

104 years later, on November 11th at 11 AM. Communities across Canada pay their respect by wearing a poppy in honor of the active members serving, the veteran of previous conflicts, and the ones that didn't return home.

An in-person event is returning this year for Remembrance Day.

The legion will be holding a ceremony at the Kelsey community school tomorrow.

A march will happen to start at the legion leaving at 10:30 and expecting to arrive at the school at 10:45.

Angie Nikolychuk, legion Branch president tells us about this year’s activities.

For any community members that would like to join in the march, you are asked to muster ahead of time.

A ceremony will follow at the school with a moment of silence expected at 11 am.

For anyone that would like to volunteer with the setup, you are asked to join in at the school this evening from 4:30 till 8:30

This year is the 25th year the Pas Alliance Church has taken part in Operation Christmas Child, a Canadian-wide nonprofit organization that sends gifts and school supplies to children living in third-world countries.

Over 7400 boxes have been delivered from The Pas since 1998, with this year’s plan delivering gifts to the Philippines and Ukraine.

Today, the community will be recognizing the contributions of Indigenous soldiers and veterans to Canada’s military service.

Veteran Affairs Canada states over four thousand Indigenous people served in the First World War

Then in World War II, over three thousand First Nations members, along with an unknown number of Metis, Inuit, and other Indigenous recruits volunteered and served in uniform.

Many Indigenous soldiers brought valuable skills with them when they joined the military such as stealth and marksmanship, which helped them become successful snipers and reconnaissance scouts.

Locally a memorial service will be held at the OCN Veterans Hall led by the venerable Lydia Constant and reverend Gloria Lavalle.

The service begins at 10:30. There will be a feast to follow the ceremony.

Community futures cedar lake region is hosting a food ecosystem workshop tomorrow to discuss issues
that may be affecting the food and beverage industry.

Katie Damon, Project Manager with CF Manitoba tells us about the workshop.

She also spoke about gaps in food and agricultural sectors, including supply chain disruption, packaging,
and labor.

Food and beverages Manitoba is looking to create connections and encourage collaboration and
the diversity that makes this sector so important, and to create pathways for entrepreneurs, business
owners and farmers to sustain and grow businesses.

Manitoba public health reported 411 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 for the week of October 23^rd to 29^th an increase from 362 in the previous week. 

The Winnipeg region had the highest number of new cases at 216 with the Northern health region again reporting the lowest number at 16 up from 13 the previous week. 

The volume of lab tests was on average 328 people tested per day an increase from 297 in the previous week with a test positivity rate of 28.7 percent an increase from 24 percent. 

There were 116 hospital admissions an increase from 100 with 7 ICU admissions down from 16 in the previous week.

Flu clinics are running in the Northern Health Region, and for those eligible and interested in getting the shot, clinics will be running This month.

Flu, Covid, and Bivalent shots will be given to those in need.
Appointments are not necessary as walk-ins are permitted.

Please remember to bring your Manitoba health card, and masks are required, you are also asked to not
attend if you are ill.

The Poppy is a symbol of remembrance worn every November to honor members of the armed forces who were killed in action.

With Remembrance Day Coming up next week the Royal Canadian Legion wants to encourage everyone to dawn a poppy in honor of Canada’s veterans.

The Legions annual poppy campaign is now underway, and canvassers will be going around town looking for support, and setting up poppy boxes at local businesses.

The legion ladies are hosting their annual Remembrance Day tea this Saturday from 1 to 3 pm, with door prizes, Bake tables, and a 50/50.

Show your support for Canadian veterans and grab a poppy, and join the royal Canadian legion at 11 am on the 11^th for ceremonies.

Lest We Forget.

Snow routes are now in effect in the town of the pas.

The town wants to remind residence that from now until April 1^st, from 2 am to 6 am in designated areas, vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Streets that are affected include First Street, Second Street Third Street, Fischer Avenue, and Cathedral Avenue.

The town asks that you make alternate parking arrangements during these hours.

The home care team, mental wellness team, and opioid agonist therapy team will all be on hand providing outreach, and information
