Sledtown Showdown Finals

The town of The Pas is into the finals of Sledtown Showdown voting. The Pas beat Russell and Area in the semi finals and are now taking on Swan River. The voting is neck and neck through 1 week and there’s just one more week left to vote. As of Friday 1000 votes had been cast and The Pas was leading with just 51 percent of the votes. To vote you can visit www.snoriderswest.com/sledtown_showdown. Voting ends on December 6th.

NHR and OHA Diabetes Presentation

The Northern Health Region and Opaskwayak Health Authority will be hosting a special holiday focused presentation on Diabetes tomorrow. Some of the things they will be presenting on include Healthy Holiday Eating Tips and Coping with the Holidays. It will be held at the Beatrice Wilson Health centre from 1:30pm to 3:30pm tomorrow. It’s open to all OCN residents. They have a Community Dietitian, a Dietetic Intern and a Mental Health Promotion Specialist hosting the presentation.

Arts,Crafts and More Sale

The Pas Arts Council’s ,Arts, Crafts and More will be held on Saturday at the Metis Hall. It will be held from  10am and 4pm. Along with some old favorites, some new crafts will be on display for purchase, and MMF will be running a concession. The arts, Crafts and More sale is a free to attend, but a silver collection will be set up at the door for donations. Call 623-7256 for more information on the event.

Socks From Santa

102.9 CJAR’s annual Socks from Santa is back this holiday season. Station manager Maureen Kozar explains that Socks from Santa is a way to help the needy in our community by collecting these items and encouraging people to drop off socks for the homeless shelter.You can donate socks right up until December 22nd. They will then be taken to Oscar’s Place before Christmas Eve. This is the third year the program has run and each year over 400 pairs of socks have been donated.

Paint Night

The Pas Arts Council will be hosting a paint night in The Pas. It’s your chance to create a masterpiece while being guided by professional artists. It will take place at the Wescana Inn from 7 to 9pm on Friday. For more information or to register you can call 204-623-3802.

Chase the Chill

For the Third annual time a group of local knitters got together to donate to the community. Chase the Chill was held in The Pas to help keep people warm over the winter months. Shirley Barbeau, organizer of the event, stated there was 57 items donated to the cause, up from last year, and almost double the amount from the first year. Overall she viewed the event as a great success!

Embracing Calm

The Northern Learning and Support Centre are hosting a session on anxiety tonight. They will be supply information to Parents and Caregivers. They will cover a general description of anxiety and what signs and symptoms may be present. They will also outline some of the environmental or contributing factors to Youth anxiety. It will be held from 7 to 8pm at Mary Duncan School and seating is limited to 20 people.

Operation Red Nose

Operation red Nose starts this weekend in The Pas. The annual designated driving service is designed to keep you safe this holiday season. Operation Red Nose will be hosted by The Pas Road Runners Swim Club once again. Last year in the Pas they gave out over 420 rides transporting over 1000 people home by 154 volunteers. This year Operation Red nose will be available Nov 27th and 28th, and December 4th 5th 11th 12th 18th 19th and 31st. This year’s honorary chair person is Mayor Jim Scott.

RCMP charge two men

The death of a man on Friday has two men facing murder charges in a homicide investigation.

 

. RCMP officers found the 36-year-old victim unresponsive around 7:30 a.m Friday morning. He was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead. 26 year old Sage Cooper and 33 year old Jamie Constant, have been arrested and taken into police custody. They’re set to appear in The Pas Provincial Court this morning.

 

Bushcraft

Bushcraft program is geared towards teaching participants the skills to surviive outdoors.

 

The program encourage youth ages 10 and up to get outside and learn some new skills. Participants will learn basic wilderness skills, survival, snowshoeing, fire building, shelter making, navigation and what it takes to survive in the winter. 

 

The program will run Saturdays, starting November 28th.

Santa Claus Parade

The Santa Claus Parade will be held December 12th in the Pas.

 

The parade always draws a large number of people out to watch and organizers hope to have alot of participants take part as well.

It begins at 2pm from the GLMC and ends at the Roy H Johnston arena.

Floats are to arrive at 1pm with judging beginning at 1:30pm.

The theme for this year is Christmas around the world, and if you would like to enter a float you can get a registration form at the TPCRC office, and on the TPCRC facebook page. Deadline to register your float is December 11th.

The Pas Arts Council will be hosting a Arts Crafts and More Sale later this month. The arts crafts and more sale will be held on Nov 28th at the Metis Hall. It’s open from 10am to 4pm. They will have many new crafts available as well as some old favourites. It’s free to attend but there will be a silver collection at the door. MMF The Pas will be running the concession. Citizen and Business of the Year

The annual Citizen and Business of the year awards have been announced.  Dave Roberts is the recipient of Citizen of the year.Klatt emphasizes to Roberts the volume and quality of work that he has done for the community, and how appreciated it is. This years business of the year is Arctic Beverages. Both Arctic Beverages and Dave Roberts do numerous different things for our community. They will be honored at the Business and Citizen of the year awards and banquet on Thursday. Tickets are available at 102.9 CJAR and Opasquia Times.  

Sledtown Showdown

The Town of The Pas is almost into the finals of the Sled Town Showdown. Snoriders magazine is currently holding a poll in search of Manitoba’s top Sled Town. Right now The Pas is in the semi finals against Russell and Area and leads with 76 percent of the votes and only 3 days left. The other 2 towns in the final 4 are Swan River and Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Voting for round 3 is open at www.snoriderswest.com/sledtown_showdown

Voting for the finals would take place from the end of November until the early part of December.

Chase the Chill

A program is underway here in The Pas to help Chase the Chill away. Chase the Chill is a program asking residents to knit or crochet scarves that will be used to decorate the Town of The Pass Office and Area. Shirley Barbeau with Chase the Chill says , it's been 3 years since the program started, and has grown substantially every year.

The scarves will be tied around trees, benches and posts and who ever needs one is welcome to take one free of charge. The idea is that less fortunate people around town will be able to help themselves and chase the chill away this winter. They will be meeting on Saturday at 9am at the Christ Anglican Church.

Sledtown Showdown Voting

The Town of The Pas has made it to the final 4 of the Sledtown Showdown. Snoriders magazine is currently holding a poll in search of Manitoba’s top Sled Town. Right now The Pas is in the semi finals against Russell and Area. The other 2 towns in the final 4 are Swan River and Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Voting for round 3 is open at snoriderswest.com/sledtown_showdown. Right now The Pas is a few votes behind Russell and Area, voting closes on November 22nd.

Two More Flu Clinics in The Pas

There are two more opportunities in The Pas to get your flu shot. The Northern health Region will be giving out the shots on Monday and again on Nov 23rd. Both sessions will take place at the Roy H Johnston Arena from 1 to 6pm. They have finished with flu shot clinics in Cormorant and Moose Lake. Shots are free and no appointment is necessary.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance day is a day to reflect upon our veterans and honour the service they provided. This morning you can honour our veterans in The Pas by attending the parade and memorial service at MBCI. The Parade will begin at 10:30am at the Royal Canadian legion branch ending at MBCI at 10:50am(ten to eleven). Remembrance Day Service will then start at MBCI. Following the service at MBCI everyone is invited back to the legion for a gathering. 

 

Fine Art Display

Some great art from local students will be on display this week. Last year, students participated in the fine arts program hosted by Joe A Ross and now, their work will be on display. The Fine Art Display will take place on Thursday and Friday during Parent Teach Conferences at Joe A Ross School. The display will be open to the public from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday at 9am to 3pm on Friday.

 

Distracted Driving Becoming a Problem

Citizens on Patrol and MPI have teamed up  to help prevent distracted driving. There will be a presentation in The Pas next Monday as well as a distracted driving simulator coming to The Pas. Elsie with the Citizens on Patrol Program says that they've seen lots of distracted drivers texting, or on their phones, and other unsafe driving practices. Many believe the sole issue is drunk driving, but any type of distraction can prove fatal. Speaker Kevin Brooks will share his story and present to High School students and the general public. He will be presetting twice at UCN on Monday at 10:30am and 2:30pm, everyone is invited.

 

CFIB report

A recent report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business ranked Manitoba’s 26 largest municipalities by their operating spending growth in relation to their population growth. The Pas ranked last. Over the study period of 2008-2013 adjusted spending growth in The Pas grew by 17 percent while population growth remained stagnant. CFIB Manitoba Director of Provincial Affairs Elliot Sims  stated that in all of the northern towns is that labor costs are causing increased operating spending growth.

 

Home Routes

 

The Home Routes concert series continues this month with their third concert. Scott Cook will be performing in The Pas coming all the way from Alberta. He will be performing next Wednesday at The Sam Waller Museum, tickets are 20 dollars each. This concert will mark the midway part of the series, as they will be taking a break from the series over the holidays. The 4th concert of the 6 concert series will take place in early February.

Babysitting Course

Kelsey Recreation and Red Cross are hosting a babysitting course in The Pas. The course will be held tonight and tomorrow at the Roy H Johnston Arena. The course is for anyone looking to become a certified babysitter. Space is limited and you can register by calling The Pas Rec and Wellness at 627-1134 or emailing rec.wellness @ town of the pas.ca. It’ starts at 6pm tonight. 

 

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a program to help children over seas this holiday season. Pat Tonn Operation Christmas Child Local Coordinator states that this special charity event is extremely easy to do, just put a shoe box together with gifts you believe would benefit children throughout the world. The boxes go to children in third world countries, or where their homes are impoverished by war, so anything given would be greatly appreciated.

October Crime Stats

The Pas RCMP had a busier month of October compared to September. In October the RCMP responded to 168 incidents of disturbing the peace in town, compared to just 139 in September. Impaired and Drugs Incidents remained the same from month to month at 9 of impaired and 4 of Drugs. In the RM of Kelsey numbers were down. Incidents of Impaired we’re down from 4 to 1 from September to October and incidents of drugs down from 3 to 1.  Disturbing the Peace incidents were up in the RM from 4 in September, to 6 in October.

War Amps Labels

The War Amps are conducting their annual address label campaign in Manitoba and across the country starting this week.  Their Public Awareness Officer Jamie Lund says funds raised by these address labels support their child amputee programs. Those that receive address labels receive them as a thank you for donating to the war amps, and helping many of their programs. They've got  programs  for child amputees across canada like their champ program. They're able to provide artificial limbs and emotional support to child amputee's to help them fufill and live an active life.

Flu Clinic

Flu Clinics continue this week in our area. It’s the final week the clinics will be held outside of The Pas. They are giving out flu shots in Cormorant from 9am-4pm until Friday. They will be finishing up the flu clinics in The Pas on Monday November 9th, 15th and 23rd. All clinics in The Pas will take place from 1-6pm at the Roy H Johnston Arena. Diabetes Awareness Education Session Postponed

The Opaskwayak Health Authority and Beatrice Wilson Health Center have postponed a session to be held today. The Diabetes Awareness Education Session was to be held tonight but has been cancelled out of respect to the late Garth Flett. The session will be held at a later date.  

 

 

Koats for Kids

Koats for Kids is a program to collect warm winter jackets that keep kids warm all winter. The program has been collecting coats and Margaret Geary with The Pas Family Resource Centre states that donations came in slow at first, but with Support from the community and the OCN Blizzard home game promotions, donations are picking up.Geary said they are anticipating collecting a few hundred coats, the same as in years previous. The Pas Family Resource Centre will be collecting coats at the OCN Blizzard game on Friday. Anyone planning on attending is asked to bring donations. They will be collecting until November 12th

Northern Juried Art Show Meeting

The Northern juried art show is on its way back. The art show will take place in the Spring but they’re holding a start up meeting tonight. The Northern Juried Art Show gives Artists in Manitoba living north of the 53rd parallel a chance to display and sell their work, and also have it critiqued by professional artists. The start up meeting will be held in the A and W meeting room.  It starts at 7pm. They will be looking for Volunteers to help organize the event this year. It will be held in the Spring of 2016.

X Roads Teen Centre


The Pas Family Resource Centre's X Roads Teen Centre is having an open house tonight. They're hosting the open house for all parents to come out and spend the evening with your teen and play some games. They will be answering any questions that pertain to the youth centre and distributing the November calendar. It will be held at The Pas Friendship Centre at 81 Edwards Avenue from 6 to 8pm
