The Pas Recreation and Wellness Centre closed for the day

The Roy H Johnston arena and The Pas Rec and Wellness Centre is closed today until further notice. Due to mechanical problems the rink and wellness centre are closed temporarily. 102.9 CJAR will update the situation further today as it becomes resolved.

Election Information for The Pas

Election Day is under 3 weeks away and you may have noticed Elections Canada has been sending out voter information cards. Joanna McLaughlin with Election Canada says there are a few mistakes with some of them. She says if the card you receive is wrong, to please bring it into the elections office at 209 Fischer Avenue. Also this year they have reduced the amount of polling locations from 19 to 11, so they ask everyone to check with the elections office to find out where they will vote, as it may not be the same location as the last election. You can contact their office at 204 627 8789, 627-8783, 627-8788 or 627-8791. Election day is set for October 19th. 

Marigold Preschool AGM

Tonight the Marigold Preschool Centre will be hosting their Annual General Meeting. It’s an important meeting and all parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. They will be taking registration for preschool classes as well. Classes run Monday to Friday mornings from 9am to 11:30am and Monday to Friday afternoons from 12:45pm to 3:15pm. For more information or application forms you can contact Lenora Kerr the director at 204-623-6006. Tonight’s meeting will start at 7pm at the centre. 

Railway Construction

Residents of  The Pas will  find some detours next week due to work being done on at railroad crossings.

 

The railroad crossing will be closed at 7th street on Monday and Tuesday, followed by the 3rd street crossing on Wednesday and Thursday while HBR is working on them.  Roads accessing these crossings will also be closed while the work is being performed.

 

 

Defeat depression walk

 The Defeat Depression Walk Run is this Saturday and Shellie Verville with the Northern Health Region says the goal of the walk is to help raise awareness.

 

Verville says depression can affect anyone and everyone, and that the walk is geared towards getting people to talk about the effects it has.  They also hope to raise funds through pledges through those participating, or online.

Another Drive One For Your Community Fundraiser

Northland Ford will once again be hosting a drive one fundraiser this weekend, their second of the month. Tomorrow everyone is invited to Northland Ford from 10-4 to take a test drive in a new ford vehicle. For every test drive taken Ford of Canada will donate $20. The money raised from this weekends drive one will be split between The Pas Rotary Club and The Pas Kinsmen Club. They will also be having a BBQ over the lunch hours. Over $1,500 was raised 2 weeks ago for their last drive one fundraiser.

Star Shine this Friday

Musicians from our community will grace the stage on Friday for the Star Shine Concert. The Christ Church is hosting the show with talent including Andrew Legany, Pandora Furniss, Lauren Wadelius and many more. Desert and Coffee will be provided and you can get your tickets at Shane’s Music locations, The Pas Regional Library and the UCN Bookstore. Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 7pm. 

Arctic Beverages Charity BBQ

Arctic Beverages will be hosting their 2nd annual charity BBQ this Friday. With every lunch purchase proceeds will go to support ONEXONE. ONEXONE’s vision is to improve the lives of children in Canada, the USA and around the world with programs dedicated to five fundamental pillars, water, health, education, play and nutrition. The BBQ will be held at the Otienka Mall from 11:30am to 1:30pm. $2 gets you a hot dog, chips and a drink. In Canada and the U.S., ONEXONE has provided over 500,000 nutritious meals to over 4,000 children in need.

Ladies Night on Saturday

The Royal Canadian Legion branch will be hosting their annual ladies night fundraiser this weekend. Saturday night ladies from The Pas and area will receive a night all to themselves with passion bingo, as well as a fashion show. Tickets are still available for $20 or a table of 8 for $160. Ladies night starts at 7pm with all money supporting the legion. You can get you tickets my contacting Emma Lees through facebook or at 204-620-2279.

The Town of The Pas is hosting a Houshold Hazardous Waste Day

The Town of the Pas will be hosting a household hazardous waste day tomorrow. Representatives from the Manitoba Hazardous waste management corporation will be on hand for the safe packaging and disposal of hazardous materials. Some of the many things that can be dropped off include, pesticides, antifreeze, furniture polishes and waxes and glues. Things that can’t include batteries, oil, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Items may be brought to the east side of the municipal office between 4pm and 8pm.  

Tim Hortons Smile Cookies Coming Back

Cookies with a smile can raise money for a local cause. Next week Tim Hortons will be selling their smile cookies once again with all money going to a local group. Cookies will be sold for $1 with all proceeds going to The Pas Families Building a Better Community Spray Park Fund. The cookie selling week begins on Monday and runs until next Sunday.

New Ambulences for Northern Manitoba

Northern Manitoba will see a few new ambulances on the road. The Manitoba Government has announced a $6,200,000 investment for the purchase of 52 new replacement ambulances. 4 of which will be located in the Northern Region servicing The Pas, Flin Flon, Easterville and Grand Rapids. The new additions to the Manitoba fleet include a new suspension system to improve the ride for patients and better protect paramedics on the job. Premier Greg Selinger said we want to provide even better care for patients across Manitoba. The ambulances should be in place by the end of the year.

FASD Awareness Walk

The Pas and Area FASD Awareness Committee will be hosting a walk next week. On Wednesday September 9th is International FASD Awareness Day and everyone is invited to take part in a walk to raise awareness of the effects of FASD. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. The walk will start at 11am at Devon Park and there will be a lunch to follow. Everyone is invited.

7th Annual Street Festival a Success

The 7th annual Street Festival took place in The Pas this weekend. Krista Tooley with the TPCRC said they had a great turnout and the rink was busy throughout the day. Due to weather the Street Festival couldn’t be held on the street this year. They moved things indoors to be held in the Roy H Johnston Arena.

UCN Pancake Breakfast Next Week

Students are getting geared up for another year of classes and UCN would like to welcome everyone back. They will be hosting a pancakes breakfast next Wednesday to welcome returning and new students back to classes. It will be held from 7:30am to 10:30am for $2 each. It’s a chance to welcome everyone back to school.
