Flyers Fall to TImberwolves

The Winkler Flyers took another game into an overtime shootout in the battle for the Centennial Cup last night. A goal from Winkler defenseman Connor Jensen during the second period held the game at a tie, Ludovic Dufort scored the game-winning shootout goal as the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior Hockey League ended the game 3-2.

Mustangs Squeeze Past Flyers in Overtime

The Melfort Mustangs and Winkler Flyers went head-to-head over the weekend. A close game that ended in a shootout as Ryan Duguay scored the game-winning goal for the Mustangs, ending the night 6-5.

 

Tonight the Winkler Flyers face the host Oakville blades, who currently tie the championship with the Flyers with a win and a loss each.

All-Indigenous Softball Skills Camp

An All-Indigenous softball skills camp is coming to the community next week. Male and female athletes can hone their skills on May 14th and 15th at Joe A. Ross Field. Both days hit the field beginning at 5:30, and there are limited spots available.

The Pas Slo-Pitch League Registration

Teams participating in the 2024 season with The Pas Slo-Pitch League need to have every player on their roster registered before the season begins.

 

Friday at 7:30 PM team captains can bring their roster sheets to The Royal Canadian Legion starting at 7:30 PM to finish the registration process.

OCN Winterhawks Looking for Community Support

The OCN Winterhawks are looking for community help as they prepare to hit the ice in Saskatoon. The Winterhawks will be participating in the Fred Sasakamoose "Chief Thunderstick" National Hockey Championships, an event that showcases First Nations players from the Junior A level and above. The team needs community assistance to help cover hotel costs. Just under $600 per player, or $5,817 for the whole team is required which will allow them to attend and show off talent from within the OCN. The tournament hits the ice from May 15th to the 19th. Badminton Provincials

Athletes from the north who were victorious in their Zone 11 matches over the weekend were in Winnipeg over the weekend for provincials. Despite a rough weekend filled with unexpected twists and turns, athletes from The Pas still persevered. Jaxen and Isaac earned their spot in the playoffs, while also being one of the top 16 teams in the province. D'Anna and Sarah finished in the Top 10 on Saturday during playoffs.

Blizzard Yearend Awards

The Blizzard held their yearend awards banquet, celebrating the teams and player's achievements throughout the season.

 

Ethan Bibeau won the 102.9 CJAR Award for Scholastic Excellence.

 

 Lucas De La Salle won the Cliff Duchesne Memorial Award for Hardest Working Player, Riley See won both the Cook and Cooke Award for Top Scorer and the Henry Sayese Top Defensive Forward Award.

 

Sam Zagari won the Wescana Inn Skill & Sportsman Award, as well as tied with Sebastian Hamming for the FunkyThreadz Most Points Award.

 

Sebastian Hamming also took home the Don Dorion Memorial Top Defenceman Award.

 

Quincy Supprien earned the Twin Motors Rookie of the Year Award. Tomas Anderson won both the Most Valuable Player and the Mouse & Sue Constant Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs Award.

 

Thomas Phillips won the Greg & Sherry Hunter Most Improved Player Award.

 

And last but not least, Jason Dick earned the Wayne Hawrysh Award for Dedication.

 

Badminton Provincials This Weekend

Athletes from the north who were victorious in their Zone 11 matches over the weekend are in Winnipeg today for provincials.

 

The provincial tournament, which began earlier today, is set to run until Saturday with students from all over the province competing for their chance to advance to nationals.

JKA National Karate Tournament

Athletes from The Pas participated in the JKA Canada National Karate Tournament in Saskatoon over the weekend. Athletes from The Pas, along with Thompson, Saskatoon, and other communities competed in Kumite and Kata events. Athletes compete either in a group or as individuals, with some reaching the podium in multiple different categories.

In Kata, Alyssa Benson placed first in the Female 11-13 green/brown belt category, and Ved Patel placed first in the male 11-14-year-old yellow/green belt category. Elise Benson placed second in the female 14-17 year old purple/brown belt and Amanda Symak placed second in the women's brown/black belt Kata Category. Stephan Reich came third in Men's black belt Kata.

In Kumite, Avery, Alyssa, and Elise Benson came first in the group B category.  Stephan Reich, along with teammates from Earl Grey, came first in the group C category. Alyssa came first and Avery came second in the female 11-13 year old purple/brown category. Stephan Reich came second in men's black belt Kumite, and Ved Patel came third in the male 11-14-year-old yellow/green belt category. Elise came third in the 14-17 purple/brown belt category and Amanda came third in the female adult brown belt category.

Melfort Mustangs Win Canterra Seeds Cup

The Flin Flon Bombers were eliminated from the finals for the third consecutive year as the Melfort Mustangs dominated in game six. Aidyn Hutchinson scored the game-winning goal as the Mustangs defeated the Bombers 4-1, winning the Canterra Seeds Cup. The Mustangs are now preparing to head to Oakville Ontario after earning their spot in the CJHL’S Centennial Cup tournament set to hit the ice May 9th-19th.
