A Mothers Ongoing Battle to Help Her Daughter

Former Resident of The Pas Olivia McCorriston is a hard working mother that always puts her children first no matter what especially her daughter Tina Hardman who was born with Global Delay and Attention Deficit and has had many ups and downs in her life.

McCorriston has always encouraged her daughter to work, to go to school and to volunteer because she believes everyone has something to contribute. Finding work for Hardman was a major obstacle, at first she was put in a work assistance program that had her working menial tasks for no money but despite this obstacle she did eventually get a part time job at an office and she has been attending Stevenson Britannia Learning Centre recently Graduating as valedictorian and earning her grade 12.

Working the part time job at the office inspired her to attend Red River College to learn office skills.  She informed her support worker that she was ready to attend only to find out that she will have to wait six months in order to get an appointment from marketabilities to help her with college fees and to help her get work. Without this funding assistance from marketabilities she will need a student loan and that will be hard for her to receive due to her disability.

McCorriston still firmly believes that we need to pay attention to people in society that aren’t being helped and she has no doubt her daughter will become successful in the end despite the lack of provincial support and she plans to contact education minster Kelvin Goertzen about this issue.
