As the temperature continues to drop, many people are using portable electric space heaters as a way to supplement central heating and stay warm. Using space heaters in a safe manner will help prevent a space heater fire.
When purchasing a heater, choose one with the seal of a qualified testing laboratory. Also make sure the heater you buy has a thermostat and overheat protection.
Place the heater on a solid, flat surface, at least 1 meter away from anything that can burn. Keep the heater out of the way of foot traffic, and never block an exit. Plug the heater directly into the wall; never use an extension cord.
Always remember to turn off and unplug your space heater before you leave the room or go to bed.
