The McKay Residential School Cultural Week continues this week in Opaskwayak, leading up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th.

 

The free week-long event is taking place at Fisher Island from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a variety of cultural teachings, workshops and activities.

 

Today, participants can take part in teachings from knowledge keepers and speakers, including traditional medicine picking, sweat lodge teachings and hide tanning.

 

Other activities throughout the week include traditional games, bear grease and cedar bath workshops, painting, massage, a First Nation Safety Officer obstacle course and a fire equipment demonstration.

 

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Tomorrow is an opportunity to honour residential school survivors and those who never returned home, while recognizing the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous families and communities.

 

Tours of the former residential school site will also be offered throughout the week.
