The Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival is more than a winter celebration; it’s a living connection to the North’s history, heritage and traditions.

The festival traces its roots back to 1916, when The Pas Dog Derby brought trappers, prospectors and fur traders together for a major sled-dog race. Dog teams were an essential part of life in northern Manitoba, providing transportation through the winter.

After being suspended during difficult economic times, the festival and World Championship Dog Race were revived in 1948, and have continued ever since.

Today, events showcasing traditional northern skills, dog mushing, trapper competitions and community spirit continue to honour generations of northern pioneers and Indigenous peoples whose knowledge and traditions helped shape life in the region. And now, preparations are underway for the 2027 festival, with organizers seeking Fur Queen candidates between 18 and 24 years old, another tradition helping keep the spirit of the Trappers’ Festival alive for a new generation.
