Northern Manitoba could have a stronger role in attracting new investment under a new provincewide economic development strategy.

 

The Manitoba government and City of Winnipeg are expanding Winnipeg Economic Development and Tourism into a provincial agency.

 

The organization will act as a single point of entry for investors and businesses looking at opportunities in Manitoba.

 

Officials say the agency will help connect businesses with government programs, partners and potential projects.

 

For Northern communities, that could make it easier to promote local opportunities and compete for investment, particularly in mining, tourism and other major industries.

 

The agency will also continue attracting major events to Manitoba.

 

Officials say the new approach is designed to reduce duplication and create a more coordinated economic development system across the province.
