No Mow May & Pollinators

As many of us wait for better weather conditions to begin our yardwork, No Mow May gives us an excuse to put off the chores and put our feet up.

Dr. Jason Gibbs, with the Department of Entomology at the University of Manitoba, shares details about No Mow May.

Gibbs said it’s important to maintain environments where pollinators, including bees, butterflies and birds, can thrive so as to protect ecosystems.

He added that in northern climates like ours, even various species of flies play a role in pollinating our flower beds and vegetable gardens.

To facilitate this, Gibbs encourages us to provide homes for pollinators in our yards and neighbourhoods by planting and encouraging the growth of native plants.

He said even dandelions, which many consider weeds, are better for the environment than grass.
