Helen Betty Osborne Award Application Begins Today

On November 13, 1971. The Body of 19-Year-Old Helen Betty Osborne was found murdered just outside of The Pas. 4 men were charged and one was convicted of second-degree murder in 1987, and the case was closed by the RCMP in 1999.

 

Helen moved from Norway House to The Pas and planned to become a teacher, but her dreams never came true.

 

Almost 52 years later, the pain to some still remains but her legacy lives on. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) an indigenous support group for The University of Manitoba, Indigenous Chamber of Commerce, and the Winnipeg Foundation offers the Helen Betty Osborne Award.

The purpose of The Helen Betty Osborne Memorial Fund is to provide financial assistance to Indigenous people residing in Manitoba who are enrolled in post-secondary studies in Manitoba.

 

 “Support for Indigenous students through these scholarships is another important step on our journey of reconciliation. The Foundation is so pleased to support this awards program, relaunched by NCTR and ICC,” said Sky Bridges, CEO of The Winnipeg Foundation.

 

Awards are granted in the amount of $2,000 each. The Application portal launched today, October 3, 2022. The application deadline is 4:00PM CDT on October 17, 2022.
