MP Niki Ashton calls for all-weather roads for Indigenous and Northern communities

THOMPSON – Yesterday, in Question Period, NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) called on the Liberals to invest in all-weather roads for Indigenous and Northern communities. She also called for action from the government to help York Factory First Nation that has lost its lifeline, its ferry, and is in need for all weather access.

Here is Ashton's question in the House of Commons:

"York Factory First Nation has lost its lifeline, its ferry for longer than expected.

The community is now isolated and needs immediate assistance. It also needs an all weather road. Climate change is already wreaking havoc here as the ground-breaking report from the Canadian Climate Institute indicates, urgent federal action is needed now across our north, including by building all-weather roads.

My Bill C-245 supports this work. Will the Liberals invest in all weather road access for York Factory and support my bill to invest in our communities that are on the front lines of climate change?"

Ashton's bill to help Indigenous and Northern communities in the fight against climate change will be up for a second hour of debate in the House of Commons on Monday.
