Province Announces Changes to Moose Hunting in Some Areas to Help Protect Moose Population

With the spring hunting season underway, Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development is highlighting opportunities and changes to the upcoming 2022 seasons.

Manitoba’s turkey season began April 16 and spring black bear hunting season begins April 25. Hunters are reminded to order their game-tag packs in advance and complete the hunter harvest surveys after the conclusion of their hunts.

The Manitoba government is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the province’s moose population. To help inform population management actions populations, hunting seasons in certain Game Hunting Areas (GHA) are being converted to draws. Affected regions include GHAs 2A, 4, 6A, 7, 7A, 9A, 10, 11 and 17A. Those looking to hunt moose within these GHAs will need to apply to the big game draw, which starts May 1.

These areas have been changed to draws to get a better understanding of the number of hunters seeking moose in each of the GHAs. Licence and game-tag availability for these GHAs for the 2022 season has been set to reflect what is known about recent hunter activity in these individual GHAs and is not meant to limit moose hunting opportunities.

Manitoba’s big game draw applications will be accepted from May 1 to 11:59 p.m. on May 31. Applications must be registered online at www.manitobaelicensing.ca. Draw results will be available June 21 and licence payments are due by 11:59 p.m. on July 15.

For information about draw application procedures, contact the e-licensing help desk at 1-877-880-1203 or visit www.gov.mb.ca/fish-wildlife/wildlife/index.html.
