The Pas Local News

Amanda Lathin

On January 23, thanks in part to the sacrifices of Manitobans, the provincial government began a slow loosening of Code Red restrictions in some parts of the province. The new Public Health orders will allow two designated visitors in homes, more businesses to open at 25% capacity, including hair salons, and non-essential items to be sold.

However, with the recent high case numbers in northern Manitoba, tighter restrictions remain. Many outbreaks are occurring in small communities, such as Lynn Lake, more so than widespread case numbers throughout the north.

The good news is that while case numbers remain high, they seem to be getting a bit more under control. In fact, right now The Pas, Opaskwayak Cree Nation and the RM of Kelsey, have a similar number of active cases as we did when we were in code orange in November. This is not to say that we can let our guard down, but there is hope that in three weeks time when Public Health re-evaluate restrictions that more businesses may be able to open up in The Pas, OCN and the RM of Kelsey.

I know this situation is frustrating for many business owners and their customers, in part because northern communities struggle to access essential and non-essential items. I want to thank The Pas and District Chamber of Commerce for sharing their concerns with my constituency office. I’m listening to small business owners calling on the government to work with northern leadership to design a plan that keeps families safe while meeting the unique needs of our community. Small businesses are what makes our communities vibrant, and their sacrifices are keeping our families healthy.

My NDP team and I have continued to call for more business supports because we know that for many the current government supports have not been enough. The government can and should do more to protect the health of Manitobans and support our economy. I’m hearing concerns from many families about when and how they will receive the vaccine once supplies increase. Last week, Wab Kinew, our Leader of the Official Opposition sent a letter to Dr. Roussin requesting a meeting to discuss the vaccine roll out plan. Our concerns for northern Manitoba restrictions are on that agenda as well. Manitoba goes beyond the Perimeter!

Having questions about the public health orders is not a good reason to break them, so please continue following orders. The virus will only spread further if we let our guard down. The more we stay vigilant, the more our numbers will decrease and the sooner restrictions can be loosened. My thoughts and prayers go out to communities currently struggling with outbreaks and I hope that they soon overcome their current situations.
