Manitoba Public Insurance Ice Safety

Manitoba Public Insurance is reminding people to be careful on the ice this time of year and to keep your vehicles off the ice until it’s safe to drive on.

Over the last five years in the province it was estimated that 60 vehicles fell through thin and unsafe ice in early December and early spring.

The ice should be at least 7 and a half inches thick to support a passenger car, 8 inches to support a light truck, and 10 inches for a medium truck.

When it comes to ice fishing, ice skating, or any other activities on the ice you should not walk on ice that is less than 4 inches thick if you are with a group and to avoid ice with cracks or ice near inlets or moving water.
