CFIB Update

The CFIB’s Director for the Prairies spoke to Arctic Radio to recap some of the major assistance programs that were announced or expanded upon this past week.

Jonathan Alward says Manitoba was the first province to announce that they are partnering with the federal government on the commercial rent assistance program, pledging 16 million dollars to help independent businesses pay their rent for April, May, and June.

Alward has heard some concerns with the way the program is set up, and how some small businesses that need that help won’t be able to access it.

Some businesses are slightly below the 70 per cent threshold but are struggling to stay afloat, and that there are also worries that their landlords won’t take part in the program.

The CFIB will continue to lobby Ottawa for changes in this regard so that the program can expand to help more businesses.
