Private Members Bill Introduced to Address Environmental Racism

Liberal MP Lenore Zann introduced private members Bill C-230 that would address environmental racism in Canada to determine how communities are being affected by environmental hazards.

The hope is to have the Environment Minister in consultation with provinces, indigenous governments, and municipalities do a study to see where environmental racism is occurring and to see what socioeconomic effects this has had in communities.

The next step would be to bring a report to parliament with advice on how to address the environmental racism.

Zann stated that if drinking water in indigenous or other Northern Communities was affected by an industrial or toxic pollutant these studies would hopefully work to help resolve the issue.

There are approximately 1,409 contaminated sites in Manitoba 79 of which are of high priority and many are found in or near first nations communities.

Zann hopes to visit and learn about Northern Manitoba communities in the near future.
