NDP Tables Canada Pharmacare Act to Cover Medication for All

The NDP has announced a plan to give universal pharmacare coverage to all Canadians, and NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill Keewatinook Aski) said that it is time for the Liberals to get on board to make this a reality.

“People in Northern Manitoba know how expensive it is to access basic needs like food and a roof over their heads,” said Ashton. “Imagine when you cannot afford the medication you or a family member needs. This shouldn’t happen to anyone. Universal pharmacare will ensure no one is left scrambling to get the care their need.”

The NDP’s Canada Pharmacare Act is based on the principles of the Canada Health Act and follows recommendations of the government’s own Hoskins’ report.

“We are putting this bill forward so we can finally see action on something people desperately need – pharmacare coverage,” added Ashton. “It would be wrong and uncompassionate for the Liberals to turn their backs on this opportunity to help people in Northern Manitoba who are struggling to make ends meet. We call on the Liberals to do the right thing and support our bill.”

Once implemented, the NDP’s pharmacare plan would be free for Canadians, make emergency wait times shorter, free-up more hospital beds for those who need them, and save Canadians more than $4.2 billion. It will also save families more than $500 a year on average, whether they have insurance or not, and save employers $600 a year per insured worker.
