Manitoba Hydro Scam Reports Jump in 2019

A report from Manitoba Hydro says they saw a five percent jump in the number of fraud related complaints they received in 2019, a sign that more customers are receiving fake emails and texts attempting to scam people out of their money.

As of mid December 904 text and email scam complaints were filed with the utility up from 862 last year and scammers are finding new ways to trick customers.

Scammers often inform customers that they need to pay their bills otherwise they will be disconnected. Manitoba Hydro does remind customers about payment but they do not threaten them with disconnection, and they do not request specific payment types such as pre paid debit cards.

Manitoba Hydro customers are urged to hang up the phone when they receive scam calls, and delete emails or text messages that threaten that they will have their service shut off if they don’t pay.
