The National Cree Gathering Unity Run began its march to the National Cree Gathering in Fisher River Cree Nation yesterday.

According to Lori Lathlin from Opaskwayak Cree Nation The purpose of the unity run and the gathering is to awaken the sleeping giant which means to teach youth in the Cree community about Cree traditions, culture, and their spiritual way of life so they can pass the knowledge over to the next generation.

The National Cree Gathering was spearheaded on Opaskwayak Cree Nation in 1996 by the late Nathan McGillivray, Elders Moses and Mabel Bignell, Oliver Bignell and the late Larry Dorion.

The gathering runs from now until Sunday.
