NDP MPs Send A Letter to Address Growing Mould Crisis on First Nations

Last week, NDP MP’s Niki Ashton, Charlie Angus, Romeo Saganash, and Georgina Jolibois sent a letter to Minster of Indigenous Services Canada Seamus O Reagan urging the government to address the growing mould crisis being faced by First Nations in Canada.

The letter stated that the federal government has a clear responsibility to ensure that on reserve housing is safe and affordable but this funding is still completely inadequate and an estimate from 2015 from the first nations financial management board assessed the on reserve housing infrastructure gap is between 3 to 5 million dollars.

The result of underfunding causes houses to be unsafe and overcrowded and overcrowding and a lack of funding for maintenance are the reasons why mould is a problem on reserve housing and exposure to mould can lead to numerous health problems including allergic reactions.

The letter concluded by saying that they expect the next federal budget to commit money to solve this crisis.

As of news time it’s not known if minster O 'Reagan responded to the letter or not.
