Manitoba Liberals Demanding Funding Fairness for Rural and Northern Buses

With the announcement that Greyhound will be discontinuing operations in Western Canada Manitoba Liberals are saying the provincial and federal governments need to step up to provide support for inter city transit not just transit systems in urban centres.

According to a news release thousands of rural and northern residents who depend on bus service will be left stranded in their communities without intercity bus services. Liberal MLA Judy Klassen says her constituents use bus service as their primary method of transportation for medical appointments and support is needed from both levels of government because if a large company like Greyhound can’t afford to service the routes it may be hard for smaller companies to do the same.

Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont says there is no clear path on where the province will invest the cash collected from Pallister’s proposed carbon tax, but a portion of the estimated 248 million dollars in net revenue could support intercity transit.
