World Autism Month Draws to a Close

World Autism Month is almost over and local autism mom Melanie Young and her son Quinn spoke to Arctic Radio News recently to give their opinions on what they think needs to be done to improve services for people on the spectrum and their families.

Melanie says it would be beneficial to have a national autism strategy because there are alot of gaps in the autism services that are available in Canada.

When it comes to education, Quinn Believes that good school teachers are ones that want students on the autism spectrum to secceed and make their school experience positive. Melanie feels that having people with autism around people they know, that are understanding of their differences will help to take pressure off people on the spectrum.

She added that she would like to see more acceptance of autism in the community and she hopes that one day The Pas will have an autism group so that those on the spectrum can have the opportunity to socialize and to help others to create a better understanding of autism.
