Northern Mayors React to Federal Government Announcing Legal Action With OmniTRAX

Churchill’s Mayor Michael Spence and The Pas Mayor Jim Scott announced their reactions to the news that the Federal Government is preparing legal action regarding OmniTRAX refusal to repair the Hudson Bay Railway and restore essential services to the North.

According to a news release Scott stated “The Current rail line owner has refused to talk directly to the northern communities about their plans and we watched in dismay as workers are laid off and rail maintenance is shipped south. He added that Omnitrax had almost 200 workers in Northern Manitoba and now it appears they are down to the final 8 in The Pas.

Churchill’s Mayor Michael Spence says with the Federal government ramping up action on this matter they can now begin planning for the 2018 season. He noted that there is still a lot of work to do to get ready for a transfer of ownership, repairing the rail line, and preparing for a successful and profitable shipping season.
