2017 Voyagers Rendezvous Canoe Race

The 2017 Voyagers Rendezvous Canoe Race began in Rocky Mountain House Alberta on July First and they finished in The Pas area 23 days later.

Event Coordinator Cathy Schwengler says the race was inspired by a similar canoe race that took place on Canada’s 100th anniversary. The paddlers received a warm welcome from the residents of Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

All of the paddlers were indigenous and Schwengler believes that they were ambassadors for their communities that spread positive messages for indigenous people across the country.

The canoe teams paddled a total 1600 kilometers and visited a total 21 communities. Schwengler would like to thank the Opaskwayak Cree Nation for their hospitality.
