The Northern Manitoba Blizzard walked away from the weekend with a single point after falling in both games against the Winkler Flyers. Friday’s matchup was a tight, low-scoring defensive battle. The first goal came from Winkler’s Tanner George early in the final period. The next came just past the halfway mark on a Flyers power play when Niklas Gudmundson and the special teams capitalized.
With the Blizz down by two, they needed a spark — and Jett Fogle delivered, burying a shorthanded goal off a clean faceoff win. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback. Winkler went back on the power play late in the game and added one more to seal a 3–1 victory.
Saturday’s game saw the Blizz get off to a much better start. The first period featured three goals from Northern Manitoba: power-play markers from Jett Fogle and Kanye Huang, along with another goal from Jack Perrier. By the end of the opening frame, the Blizz held a 3–1 lead.
The next set of goals wouldn’t come until the third period, when Winkler responded with an impressive push, scoring three straight to take a 4–3 lead. Luckily for the Blizz, with just under two minutes remaining, Kanye Huang found the back of the net for the second time that night to tie the game and send it to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the game headed to a shootout. Winkler’s Connor Rieger and Kam Thomas scored on both of their attempts, securing a remarkable come-from-behind win for the Flyers.
The Blizzard now look ahead to a busy week, starting with a home matchup against Swan Valley tomorrow. Puck drop is set for 7:00 P.M., and 102.9 CJAR will have full coverage from start to finish.
