Blizz Sweep Wolverines to Close Out October Homestand

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard picked up back-to-back wins this past weekend against divisional rival Waywayseecappo, capping off their October homestand.

Friday’s thrilling game was arguably the best of the two. The Blizz started in a one-goal deficit after Mikey Thomas scored his sixth goal of the year to close out the first period. Late in the second, assistant captain Hunter Dingman netted a nifty goal to tie things up heading into the third.

A little after the ten-minute mark in the third period, the Blizz ran into some penalty trouble, and the Wolverines’ power-play unit capitalized to make it 2–1 with just over seven minutes left in regulation. In the final minute, the Blizz pulled goaltender Nick Kunyk for the extra attacker — a move that paid off as The Pas’ own Isaac Tomchak scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime period, it was none other than Isaac Tomchak again who buried his second goal of the night, giving the Blizzard their first win of the season.

Saturday’s game was just as exciting as Friday’s. However, once the third period hit, the Blizz took control and went on to win decisively. Much like game one, Waywayseecappo struck first with Dylan Duzan’s first-period goal. Justin Whitrow tied things up in the second for the Blizz, but just before the end of the period, more penalty trouble hurt them again as the Wolverines’ power-play unit converted to regain the lead.

In the final frame, the Blizz stormed back with three unanswered goals. The first came on a Blizzard power play, with Trystyn Sidor netting the game-tying goal. Defenceman Dawson McAuley followed up with the go-ahead tally, and the final dagger came courtesy of Isaac Tomchak, who sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

The Blizz are now riding a two-game win streak heading into tomorrow’s matchup against the MGEU West Division’s number one team, the Dauphin Kings. 102.9 CJAR will be broadcasting tomorrow’s game — puck drop is at 7:00 P.M., with pregame coverage beginning around 6:45 P.M.
