Late Surge Lifts Blizzard Past Cubs in Centennial Cup Clash

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard picked up their first win this past Saturday against the Sudbury Cubs in Centennial Cup action.

Sudbury's Lincoln Moore scored early in the first period, capitalizing on a power play after Tyler Bernier was sent off for holding. In the opening minutes of the second, Jack Linton responded for the Blizzard with his lone goal, levelling the score at 1-1 heading into the third.

The final period erupted with offence, producing seven goals, five of which came from Team NorMan. Just 19 seconds in, Spencer Horgan restored the Cubs' lead with his second tally of the night. But after Sudbury was called for too many men on the ice, the Blizzard struck back on the power play, with Cheechoo Lathlin notching his first of the tournament.

Momentum stayed with the Blizz as another power play followed—this time after a hooking penalty to Cubs centreman Sam Assinewai. Brett Ward made it count, putting the Blizzard ahead for the first time in the game.

That lead was short-lived, as Ben Harris answered 30 seconds later for Sudbury, knotting it at 3-3. But the Blizzard weren't done. Forwards Alexandre Andre, Tyler Dahms, and Jack Linton went on a tear, scoring three unanswered goals and sealing a 6-3 victory for Team NorMan.

The Blizzard are back in action today, taking on the SIJHL's Kam River Fighting Walleye at 8:30 p.m. CST. Games can be streamed live at hnlive.ca.
