Badminton Provincials This Weekend

Athletes from the north who were victorious in their Zone 11 matches over the weekend are in Winnipeg today for provincials.

 

The provincial tournament, which began earlier today, is set to run until Saturday with students from all over the province competing for their chance to advance to nationals.

JKA National Karate Tournament

Athletes from The Pas participated in the JKA Canada National Karate Tournament in Saskatoon over the weekend. Athletes from The Pas, along with Thompson, Saskatoon, and other communities competed in Kumite and Kata events. Athletes compete either in a group or as individuals, with some reaching the podium in multiple different categories.

In Kata, Alyssa Benson placed first in the Female 11-13 green/brown belt category, and Ved Patel placed first in the male 11-14-year-old yellow/green belt category. Elise Benson placed second in the female 14-17 year old purple/brown belt and Amanda Symak placed second in the women's brown/black belt Kata Category. Stephan Reich came third in Men's black belt Kata.

In Kumite, Avery, Alyssa, and Elise Benson came first in the group B category.  Stephan Reich, along with teammates from Earl Grey, came first in the group C category. Alyssa came first and Avery came second in the female 11-13 year old purple/brown category. Stephan Reich came second in men's black belt Kumite, and Ved Patel came third in the male 11-14-year-old yellow/green belt category. Elise came third in the 14-17 purple/brown belt category and Amanda came third in the female adult brown belt category.

Melfort Mustangs Win Canterra Seeds Cup

The Flin Flon Bombers were eliminated from the finals for the third consecutive year as the Melfort Mustangs dominated in game six. Aidyn Hutchinson scored the game-winning goal as the Mustangs defeated the Bombers 4-1, winning the Canterra Seeds Cup. The Mustangs are now preparing to head to Oakville Ontario after earning their spot in the CJHL’S Centennial Cup tournament set to hit the ice May 9th-19th.

Early Bird Pricing Ends Tomorrow

The early bird deadline to register for the Pas Tri-Community Triathlon is just a day away. The cost to register is currently $25 per participant, which will rise to $30 by the end of the day tomorrow. To register as an individual or a team click here.

Bombers Continue To Push Back

The Fuse was lit as the Flin Flon Bombers pushed back against the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday. After a rough start to the series, the Flin Flon Bombers prevented a series sweep and closed the gap to 3-2 for The Mustangs. The series now heads into game 6, set to hit the ice of the Northern Lights Palace tomorrow at 8:30 central time.

Winkler Flyers Win Turnbull Cup

The Winkler Flyers completed their series sweep against the Steinbach Pistons over the Weekend. As the game crept into the final 5 minutes of the first overtime period Flyers Forward Zach Nicolas took advantage of a 3 on 5 powerplay, dumping the puck past Cole Plowman.

 

The Winkler Flyers take home the Turnbull Cup for the first time since 1998 and have earned their spot in the 2024 Centennial Cup tournament set to take place In Oakville Ontario with the host Oakville Blades May 9th-19th.

Midwest Karate Head to Nationals

Midwest Karate is heading to Saskatoon this weekend to compete in the nationals. The tournament takes place tomorrow, best of luck to all those competing!

Flyers Host Pistons Tonight

The Steinbach Pistons are looking to turn their series around as they head to Winkler in game 4 against the Flyers tonight. The Flyers currently lead the series 3-0 against the Pistons and could win the Turnbull Cup tonight. The puck drops tonight at 7 PM.

Bombers Avoid Elimination

The Flin Flon Bombers avoided elimination last night with a narrow 4-3 win over the Melfort Mustangs. Kylynn Olafson scored the game-winning goal 15 minutes into the first overtime period, resulting in the Bomber's first win of the playoff series against the Mustangs. The series now moves on to game 5, set to hit the ice of the Whitney Forum on Saturday at 7:30 Central Time.

The Pas Minor Baseball Deadline Approaching

The Pas Minor Baseball Association is still taking registrations ahead of the 2024 season set to begin in early May. The deadline to register your child aged 4 to 17 years old is May 6th with a tentative start date around May 8th. To register your child click here.

Game 4 of the SJHL Finals Tonight

The battle for the Canterra Seeds Cup could come to an end tonight as the Melfort Mustangs host the Flin Flon Bombers in game 4 of the final series.

 

The Bombers, who have been finalists in the previous two consecutive playoff series, fell to the Mustangs 4-3 in double overtime last night.

 

The Mustangs now lead the series 3-0 against the Bombers and are preparing for puck drop tonight at 8:30 PM Manitoba time at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Bombers Aim To Turn Series Around

The Flin Flon Bombers are in Melfort today as they look to bounce back from a 2-0 series deficit against the Melfort Mustangs. The Mustangs lead the series after back-to-back wins in Flin Flon, and now host the Bombers for games 3 and 4 in the series.

 

The puck drops tonight at 8:30 PM Central time at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Winkler Leads Finals 3-0

The Winkler Flyers back the Steinbach Pistons into the corner after a 4-3 Overtime victory last night. Lucas Ens scored the game-winning goal as the Flyers took the series to a 3-0 lead against the Pistons. Game 4 goes on this Friday as the Winkler Flyers host the Pistons, who are sure to fight back to save the series from being a complete sweep. The puck will drop at 7 PM at the Winkler Centennial Arena.

35+ Slo-Pitch Tournament

A 35+ Co-Ed Slo-Pitch Tournament is on the way during the Weekend of July 20th. The tournament will be in a round-robin, double-knockout format. Registration cost is $575 per team with a $275 deposit required by July 12th to secure your team's spot. To register, Contact Eric Bignell on Messenger, or by phone at 620-8152.

The Pas Tri-Community Triathlon

The Pas, Tri-Community Triathlon is coming up in just over a month. Individuals or teams will swim, bike, and run various distances to earn gold in their age groups. The Triathlon is open to anyone 6 and up, with different distances depending on the age group you are in. For example, contestants aged 6-7 years old will Swim 50 meters, bike 1.5 kilometers, and run 500 meters. Contestants 16 and up will swim 300 meters, bike 10 kilometers, and run 3 kilometers. Athletes racing aged 10-15 years old can qualify for the 2024 summer games in Dauphin. To register click here. The cost to register is $25 with early bird pricing before April 30th.

Zone 11 Badminton

The postponed Zone 11 Badminton tournament that was supposed to be held last weekend is coming up. This Friday and Saturday Junior and Senior Varsity students from the North will meet at R.D. Parker Collegiate in Thompson for singles and doubles matches. Students who win their matches can advance to the provincial tournament set to take place in Winnipeg from May 2nd to the 4th. 

Blizzard Awards Banquet

The Blizzard are hosting their yearend awards banquet later today. Fans are welcome and encouraged to attend the event beginning at 6 PM. Tickets can be purchased at Funky Threadz for $40, which includes a meal beginning at 6:30 followed by the awards ceremony.

The Pas Minor Soccer Registration

There is still time to get your child registered for the Pas Minor Soccer set to begin in late May. The program is $35 per child for ages 4-17 years old. Parents of children turning 4 during the program are welcome to register their child as well, as long as they also volunteer to coach. The Program is currently in need of volunteers to help coach the teams on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To register your child before the May 26 deadline head over to the Kelsey Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Zone 11 Badminton Tournament Canceled

Due to the extreme weather in the north, the Zone 11 Badminton Tournament that was set to take place tomorrow and Saturday in Thompson has been cancelled.

The 2023-2024 Blizzard Season Comes To an End

The Blizzards season officially came to an end last night against the Steinbach Pistons. Despite relatively even shots on goal for both teams Cole Plowman and the Steinbach Pistons shutout the Blizzard 2-0 in game 7 of the semifinals last night. Shane Burns and Samuel Noad scored both goals against the Blizzard during the second period. The Steinbach Pistons now move on to the finals against the Winkler Flyers, set to begin in Steinbach on Friday at 7 PM.

 

UCN Floor Hockey Change

The University College of the North will be hosting floor hockey tonight but with a different change in scenery. Previously held at the Kelsey Recreation and Wellness Centre, tonight's game will return to the UCN's gym. Anyone 15 and older is welcome to attend the free event as long as they bring clean indoor shoes. Sticks, eye protection and goalie equipment will be provided. Games begin at 5 PM tonight and run until 7 PM.

The Pas Slo-Pitch League Meeting Tonight

All players and captains with The Pas Slo-Pitch league are invited and encouraged to participate in the first league meeting of 2024 tonight at the Royal Canadian Legion. Among tonight's topics, the league needs volunteers to take on various roles throughout the 2024 season to ensure a smooth year. The meeting takes place at 7:30 in the club room.

Tri-Community Minor Baseball Clinics This Week

The Tri-Community Minor Baseball Association and Baseball Manitoba will be hosting baseball clinics this week ahead of the 2024 season. The clinics are indoors, away from the elements and are free to attend.

 

Tomorrow beginning at 6:30 they will be hosting a coaches clinic for anyone interested in coaching a team this year.

 

There will be two, player clinics on Thursday at Scott Bateman Middle School. The first one, for ages 11 and under begins at 6, followed by one for ages 12 and up at 7:30.

Parents wishing to register their children for the camp can also attend an in-person registration event tonight, from 5-8 PM at the Roy H Johnston Arena.

Blizzard Head To Steinbach in Game 7 Tonight

The Blizzard are on the road today in a vital game 7 against the Steinbach Pistons. Both teams have fought hard, winning two games each while away and one at their respective home rinks. The Puck drops tonight at 7 PM. The winner of tonight's game goes on to face the Winkler Flyers, who ousted the Virden Oil Capitals in their series 4-2 after a 2-1 win in the 4th overtime period on Monday.

Blizzard fall 4-1

The Blizzard are preparing for game 7 against the Steinbach Pistons after a 4-1 loss last night. Cheechoo Lathlin scored the first goal of the night late into the first period, which wound up being the Blizzard's loan goal that night. Despite a relatively even 11-10 shot on goal during the second period, The Pistons managed to capitalize on three of them, heading into the final period with a two-goal lead. Connor Paronuzzi scored the Piston's fourth goal in the third period as the night ended 4-1 against the Blizzard. The team now heads to Steinbach Tomorrow to face the Pistons in a do-or-die game 7 starting at 7 PM.
