OCN Becomes First Cree Nation in Manitoba to Request Policing Services from Manitoba First Nations Police Service

With the communities’ safety and best interest in mind, Opaskwayak Cree Nation will be changing the way their members receive policing services. After much research and consideration a decision was made to move from the RCMP to the Manitoba First Nations Policing Service.

OCN Chief Christian Sinclair Says that 70 percent of officers within the force are first nations and they will have an understanding of the struggles of growing up in a colonial system which will make it easier for the community to put their trust in the force. He added that this is a win for our community and expects to see the impacts immediately.

The transition phase of the policing services is expected to take about six months.
