The NDP secured a key meeting on the forced sterilization of women in Canada earlier this week at the standing committee on Health and they won unanimous support after they moved a motion calling for the department of health to provide a briefing on forced sterilization something that has happened to a lot of indigenous women.

Our local MP Niki Ashton says that forced sterilization is torture and we must seek justice for the women affected. The UN Committee on Torture and Amnesty International have also condemned forced sterilization.

Sixty indigenous women are engaged in a class action lawsuit alleging they were subjected to forced sterilization in our health care system and some occurred as recently last year.

The NDP plans to push for longer term in depth studies to ensure that women will not have to face forced sterilization again.
