Dougald Lamont Wants PC Marijuana Legislation Amended

Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont recently stated that the Progressive conservative’s legislation on Marijuana needs to be amended.

The way the current amendment is written would mean that an 18 year old could go to jail for a year or face a $100,000 fine for possession of Marijuana because the Pallister Government has set the legal age for buying, using, and possessing the drug at 19.

People 17 and under would be covered by the Youth Criminal Justice Act but this amendment would mean that 18 year olds could face the same punishment intended for more serious offenses.

Lamont stated in a news release that it defies common sense to throw an 18 year old in jail for a year or fine them for something perfectly legal for people 19 and older.

The Manitoba Liberals are expected to introduce a report stage amendment to Bill 11 later today that would reduce the legal age to 18 to purchase marijuana legally in Manitoba.
