Amanda Lathlin Addresses The Manitoba Legislatures Question Period on Key Northern Issues

The Pas MLA Amanda Lathlin addressed the Manitoba Legislature recently by asking if the provincial government will reverse its harmful cuts to homecare. Lathlin was approached by a constituent at Pineview Manor who told Lathlin that she may be forced to move to a personal care home even though she is happy where she lives.

Heather Stefanson the Minister of Justice responded to Lathlins question by saying that after 17 years of quote “Mismanagement” of the health care system the province is in the situation that it is in today. She added that the Minister of Health is working with stakeholders to ensure that health care is there for Manitobans when they need it.

Lathlin added that the Provincial Government is also cutting funding for mental health and addiction services at the same time that they are predicting the loss of at least 1500 jobs in Northern Manitoba. According to Lathlin, in the face of job losses strong mental health and addiction support becomes an essential service especially in Northern Communities. She asked if the government would acknowledge that their plan isn’t working and instead commit to expanding on site access to mental health services in Northern Manitoba towns and First Nations.

Stefanson responded by acknowledging that there is work to be done to strengthen the system and improve access to mental health and addictions services throughout Manitoba.  She added that they have engaged in the services of Virgo Planning and Evaluation to assist the government in developing a comprehensive mental health and addictions strategy.  They hope to hear the outcomes of this report in the next few months.
