Northern Health Regions Shares Information on Influenza

With Flu season well underway, The Northern Health Region has some important information about influenza. The illness is a viral respiratory illness that is more serious than a common cold, it is not a gastrointestinal illness.

The vaccine protects you from 4 different influenza viruses and the vaccine needs to be given every year because viruses in the community change and may be slightly different each year. Because the flu viruses in the vaccine are dead you cannot catch influenza from the vaccine.

The vaccine is 60-90 percent effective for healthly adults but less effective for the elderly and people that are ill. Immunization is essential for those at risk of serious illness from influenza as well as caregivers, health care workers, and daycare workers.

The Primary Health Care Centre will be having flu clinics at the Roy H Johnston Arena on October 30th, November 6th, and November 20th from 1-6PM.
