World Suicide Prevention Day

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Charles Gregoire (GREG WAH) with Primary Health in The Pas says that although the number of suicides in the north is on the decline, it is still very concerning. That’s why he’s in favour of this year’s theme in Manitoba, “Let’s Talk About It”…

Gregoire says that people do have difficulties coping with everyday life, and they want get the message out to  people who may be having thoughts of suicide is that they are not alone.  He added that often all that all that is needed is to have someone to talk about your feelings with.

Gregoire also says that there are many things that we can do if someone hints  they may be planning on taking their own life.
He commented that we should always take the person seriously, question them, and if you feel it may be a serious threat even though they may say it is not, you should take them to emergency or seek other help.

There are many different phone numbers to call if you’re uncomfortable talking about suicide with someone you know. The Suicide Prevention Line is 1-877-435-7170 and the Kids Help Line is 1-800-668-6868

Teresa Roberts with the Canadian Mental Health Association would also like to form a suicide support group for The Pas. If you would like to help raise awareness about suicide in the community, call Teresa at 623-1028.
